Map of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics through 1991 Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic Estonia Soviet Socialist Republic Teacher Notes: Explain to students that each of these were similar to our states in the U.S. in that they were all part of the USSR. Russia and several surrounding states unite to form the U.S.S.R. (Union of Soviet Socialist Republic) Communist leaders establish the USSR as an unlimited government After 1989, big changes came to Russia. Soviet leader Gorbachev introduced reforms promoting a freer society, less government control, and free market policies.
