Baptism and Salvation Which Comes First?
Presentation transcript:

So far in our study we have examined: That there is currently only one baptism, that of the Great Commission- baptism for the remission of sins The seven “baptisms” to which the New Testament refers

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, Ephesians 4:4, 5

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:15, 16

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:18, 19

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

We have seen that the New Testament defines baptism as an immersion in water

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4

And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:36

We have seen that the New Testament defines baptism as an immersion in water We have seen that it has purpose Since God has stated a purpose for it, it must be done for that purpose

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Acts 22:16

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: I Peter 3:21

We have seen that proper baptism puts one “into Christ,” where all spiritual blessings and salvation are found

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:3

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:27

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: Ephesians 1:3

Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. II Timothy 2:10

We have seen that proper baptism puts one “into Christ,” where all spiritual blessings and salvation are found We have also noticed numerous examples of those who obeyed the gospel, being baptized into Christ for the remission of sins

Last week we studied the impact of two words on this subject: The Greek word eis The English word and

Today, we look further at Acts 2:38 & Mark 16:16 and also study Romans 6

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins Acts 2:38 Remission of Sins Repentance Baptism Repentance Remission of Sins Baptism Baptism Remission of Sins Repentance Remission of Sins Baptism Repentance Baptism Repentance Remission of Sins Repentance Baptism Remission of Sins Only Six Possible arrangements for this main statement Universalism/Grace Only Catholicism Faith Only Truth ? ? ? ? ?

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16 He that believeth not and is baptized not shall be saved He that believeth and is not baptized shall be saved He that believeth not and is baptized shall be saved He that believeth and is baptized shall not be saved He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved Only five alternatives to this main statement Universalism- all will be saved Faith Only proposition Calvinism- Infant Baptism Atheistic- no one saved Truth ? ? ? ?

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16

“Believeth” “Is Baptized” “Shall Be Saved” Belief Here Baptism Here Salvation Here Aorist Participle Aorist Participle Future Passive Indicative (Main Verb) “The Greek never used the Aorist Participle for subsequent action. No example of that use has ever been shown.” -A.T. Robertson (Baptist Professor & Greek Scholar) “The Aorist Participle never gives subsequent action.” -A.T. Robertson (Baptist Professor & Greek Scholar) “The Aorist Participle indicates action which is antecedent to the action of the main verb.” -Ray Summers (Baptist Professor & Greek Scholar)

“Believeth” “Is Baptized” “Shall Be Saved” Belief Here Baptism Here Salvation Here Aorist Participle Aorist Participle Future Passive Indicative (Main Verb) Since the Aorist Participle never indicates action which is subsequent to the main verb, neither believing nor being baptized occurs after one is saved—rather both occur before salvation

Romans 6:17, 18

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. Romans 6:17, 18

In order for there to be a “form of doctrine” there must first be doctrine What was the “doctrine” Paul was delivering? It was the gospel of Jesus Christ—His death, burial, resurrection

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: I Corinthians 15:1-4

I Corinthians 15:3, 4 Romans 6:17, 18

Paul had alluded to this doctrine numerous times in Romans 6 prior to verses 16 & 17

baptized into his death? Vs. 3 buried with him by baptism into death Vs. 4 like as Christ was raised up from the dead Vs. 4 if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death Vs. 5 we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection Vs. 5 our old man is crucified with him Vs. 6 if we be dead with Christ Vs. 8 Christ being raised from the dead Vs. 9

Paul had alluded to this doctrine numerous times in Romans 6 prior to verses 16 & 17 Well established, then, was this doctrine of Christ, the gospel Now he commends them for having obeyed “that form of doctrine” which had been delivered to them

The word “form” means “model, mold, pattern” They had become obedient to the model, mold, pattern of the teaching delivered to them The doctrine delivered them involved the death, burial and resurrection of Christ

What was the “form” (mold, model, pattern) of that which they had obeyed? He had mentioned that to them earlier in this same chapter

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Romans 6:3-6 Death Burial Resurrection

What was the “form” (mold, model, pattern) of that which they had obeyed? He had mentioned that to them earlier in this same chapter When, and only when, they were baptized they “obeyed that form of doctrine”

Christ Died For Sin Resurrection of Christ Burial of Christ I Corinthians 15:3, 4 Romans 6:3, 4 Romans 6:17, 18

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:2-4

Christ Died For Sin Resurrection of Christ Burial of Christ Resurrection with Christ Burial with Christ Believer Dies to Sin I Corinthians 15:3, 4 Romans 6:3, 4 Romans 6:17, 18 The Whole Process “FORM” Mold, Model, Pattern “FORM” Mold, Model, Pattern “FORM” Mold, Model, Pattern

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:2-4 If not “baptized into Christ,” never contacted His death If never contacted His death, Never Contacted his blood

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:2-4 Because “baptized into Christ”/ “Baptized into his death” If no baptism, no association with his death or his burial

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:2-4 “Form” Mold, model, pattern “Form” Mold, model, pattern If no baptism, no association with his death or burial or Resurrection

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:2-4 “ ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you” Without Baptism that form of doctrine Could Never be obeyed in any part

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Romans 6:5, 6 “Form” Mold, model, pattern “Form” Mold, model, pattern

For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:7-11 “Form” Mold, model, pattern

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Romans 6:12, 13 For what reason? Because you have died, been buried and Raised with Jesus Why? Because you have died, been buried and Raised with Jesus

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. Romans 6:17, 18 When? Before They Obeyed What was it? Death, burial, Resurrection of Jesus When had they obeyed it? When they were baptized When was “THen”? When they had “obeyed…that form of doctrine” When had they done this? When they were “Baptized Into Christ!” Only through baptism could they possibly have “obeyed…that form of doctrine” And it was then (and only then) that they were made “free from sin”

Christ Died For Sin Resurrection of Christ Burial of Christ Resurrection with Christ Burial with Christ Believer Dies to Sin I Corinthians 15:3, 4 Romans 6:3, 4 Romans 6:17, 18 The Whole Process Before the Acts  They Were Servants of Sin When It Was Done  Obedience From the Heart Form Obeyed The Results  Became Servants of Righteousness United with Christ

The only thing that could possibly be under consideration as being “that form” is baptism!

Before their baptism, they were “the servants of sin” When they “obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine” (when they were baptized) they were made “free from sin” (AT that point- “THEN”) When they “obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine” (when they were baptized) they were made “free from sin” (AT that point- “THEN”)

What conclusions must be drawn? If one does not “obey from the heart that form of doctrine,” he cannot be associated with or contact the death, burial and resurrection of Christ If one does not “obey from the heart that form of doctrine” he cannot be made “free from sin”

What conclusions must be drawn? Since “that form of doctrine” has been proven to be baptism, no one can be associated with or contact the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and be “made free from sin” without being “baptized into Jesus Christ”

Christ Died For Sin Resurrection of Christ Burial of Christ Resurrection with Christ Burial with Christ Believer Dies to Sin I Corinthians 15:3, 4 Romans 6:3, 4 Romans 6:17, 18 The Whole Process Before the Acts  They Were Servants of Sin When It Was Done  Obedience From the Heart Form Obeyed The Results  Became Servants of Righteousness United with Christ Have you “obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine?” Have you been “baptized into Jesus Christ?”
