Baptism – Part 2 The New Testament The Word – Baptism The NT Teaching

The Word - Baptism Baptism was in use in the 1100’s as an English word. It came from old French. Most Bible translators have not wanted to translate the word – it would harm sales among those who practice sprinkling Most chose to use the transliterated form of the word by giving the Greek word an English spelling rather than translate the Greek word Thus the Greek word “baptisma” became the English word “baptism”

It is all Greek Two words often heard: –Baptidzo – verb (Mark 16:16 – be baptized) –Baptisma – noun (Romans 6:4 – buried in baptism) ThayerThayer - 1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk) 2) to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one’s self, bathe 3) to overwhelm

It is all Greek TorreyTorrey - Administered by immersing the whole body of the person in water Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament WordsVine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words - "baptism," consisting of the processes of immersion, submersion and emergence (from bapto, "to dip"), is used (a) of John's "baptism," (b) of Christian "baptism," (c) of the overwhelming afflictions and judgments to which the Lord voluntarily submitted on the cross

It is all Greek Thayer –Thayer – (bapto) – 1) to dip, dip in, immerse 2) to dip into dye, to dye, colour King James Dictionary –King James Dictionary – Baptize To immerse; to dip or dye a thing.

It is all Greek For the purpose of the rest of the discussion it will be noted that the mode of baptism is in the definition of full water immersion. The Greek word “baptidzo” means to immerse, dip, or bury in water. The very Greek word itself excludes it from meaning “sprinkling” or “pouring” or any other attempt to distort the meaning.

NT Passages Matthew 3:13-17 Matthew 3:13-17 - 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

NT Passages Matthew 28:18-20 - Matthew 28:18-20 - 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

NT Passages Mark 16:15-16 - Mark 16:15-16 - 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

NT Passages John 3:3-5 - 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

NT Passages Acts 2:38-41 - Acts 2:38-41 - 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

NT Passages Acts 8:34-39 - Acts 8:34-39 - 34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, “I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”

NT Passages Acts 8:34-39 - Acts 8:34-39 - 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.

NT Passages Acts 22:16 - Acts 22:16 - And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

NT Passages Romans 6:3-5 - Romans 6:3-5 - 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,

NT Passages Galatians 3:26-27 - Galatians 3:26-27 - 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Ephesians 4:4-6 - Ephesians 4:4-6 - 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

NT Passages Colossians 2:12 - Colossians 2:12 - buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. Titus 3:5 - Titus 3:5 - not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

NT Passages 1 Peter 3:21 - 1 Peter 3:21 - There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Conclusion We have not studied EVERY passage in the New Testament We have studied many of them as they relate to the act of obedience as Jesus commanded. NOTE: NOTE: Next – What Baptism IS / What Baptism DOES
