ANDREW MARTINEZ LEADERSHIP & SERVICE RESEARCH HISTORY EDUCATION HONORS & AWARDS HOME SITE MAP Andrew Martinez studies Journalism at San Jose State University. He is a McNair Scholar and was involved in the Global Media Initiative, a cohort of young journalists who visited France and the United Kingdom to cover the state of their economies in early Andrew devotes himself to serving underrepresented communities. For the past five years he has been a dance instructor, choreographer of musicals, and occasional rehearsal and performance pianist at a racially diverse performing arts magnet high school in San Jose His educational goal is to receive a Ph.D. in Performance Studies and examine the performance of gender, as well as queer issues in performance. More specifically, to research how dance and musical theatre performance can have an impact on nontraditional and marginalized audiences. In his spare time, he enjoys dancing ballet, playing jazz piano and singing. CONTACT ANDREW

Responsible for verifying all of the facts in a story before it is printed. May 24, 2009-July 31, 2009 Participated in the Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) at UNC-CH. Funded by the Mellon Foundation and UNC-CH, MURAP’s objective is to foster the entrance of talented students from diverse backgrounds into graduate school and faculty positions within the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts in U.S. colleges and universities. March 20-March 27, 2009 Staff writer for the Global Media Initiative, a team of SJSU journalists who traveled to London and Paris to write about their respective economies. Worked with concerned neighbors and business owners to identify, report and remove graffiti from public and private spaces. July 2008 City of San José, Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services. Participated in trail work projects ranging from rock work to pruning to stair building. November 13-28, 2007 Applied Materials ‘Silicon Valley Turkey Trot’, 5-10k and Half-Marathon, San José, CA. Assisted event planner in registration duties, distributed prizes, and managed the business and volunteer check-in. January 2007 New York City Coalition Against Hunger.
