What is BIHS? 9th – 12 th Grade Program 1,000+ students 34 Teachers 3 Counselors Leadership Team includes: 2 Lead Teachers, 1 Vice Principal and 1 IB Coordinator Houses an IB Program in the 11 th and 12 th Grades

Structures in BIHS Teachers teach both lower and higher grades to provide for a continuum in the curriculum Global focus prepares students for the IB Program in the 11 th and 12 th grades. Focus on writing, critical thinking skills, and academic language designed to prepare students for higher level work. Long term planning that has students looking to the future

The Learner Profile It’s the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21 st century. IB learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective

9 th Grade in BIHS Students have 3 Core Classes – Advanced Biology, Freshman Literature, and Freshman Global Studies Units in History and English based on 5 different areas of the world. Interdisciplinary learning Math, World Language, and Electives are school wide classes

10 th Grade in BIHS All students take 3 classes in BIHS Global Studies Global Literature Comparative Values and Beliefs/Economics All students take English and History with the same classmates (cored) PSAT in October College Trip in Spring History Research Paper in the Spring

11 th Grade in BIHS All students take two IB classes IB English HL IB History of the Americas HL/Theory of Knowledge All students participate in: Experiential Learning (CAS) Extended Essay (EE) Take SAT/ACT Meet with College Counselors in the Spring College Fair, May 4 th, 2015 Build relationships with teachers and counselors in preparation for college application process and letters of recommendation. IB Exams in May

12 th Grade in BIHS All students take 3 classes: IB English IB History Theory of Knowledge/American Government Students finish their Extended Essay in the Fall Students continue with CAS activities until the end of February of senior year. Attend College visits in the CCC, Community College Fair in December, and Trades Fair in November College Applications: UC/CSU applications due November 30 th. Complete senior profile and ask for letters of recommendation IB Exams in May

Why the International Baccalaureate (IB) at BIHS? Holistic Approach: IB helps develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Curriculum: Genuine awareness of the interdependence of countries and peoples. Ability to see one’s own culture, language and nation in a global perspective Ability to recognize and rejoice in diversity Student Centered : Focus on the student beyond the classroom

Overview of IB Diploma Program in BIHS Students begin participating in IB classes and requirements beginning in the 11 th grade and continuing through the 12 th grade. All BIHS students participate in certain aspects of the IB Program. These include: IB English IB History TOK, (Theory of Knowledge) CAS, (Creativity, Action and Service) The EE, Extended Essay Students choose to take IB classes in other subject areas BIHS students may opt to not take IB exams, take IB Exams for certificates in particular subject areas, or go for the IB Diploma.

IB Diploma and IB Certificates in BIHS (go to and bihs.berkeleyscools.net) IB Certificates Complete any IB course and take the IB exam in that course See course progressions Complete assessments given by the classroom teacher at BHS Test are taken in either the junior or senior year IB Diploma Complete assessments given by the classroom teacher at BHS Take all six IB courses and all six exams; 3 HL and 3 SL or 4 HL and 2 SL 2 tests may be taken in the junior year, 4 tests in the senior year Achieve a cumulative score of 24 (IB exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 7).
