Cell Energy PHOTOSYNTHESIS LIFE’SACTIVITIES RESPIRATION SUN ENERGY SUGARATP(ENERGY)

SUN The ultimate source of energy on Earth

How do AUTOTROPHS get energy to live?

AUTOTROPHS Use energy from the sun to make their own food by doing photosynthesis

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Plant cells take energy from the sun and turn it into food This Takes place in the chloroplast of cells What organelle does photosynthesis take place in?

What do Plants need to do PHOTOSYNTHESIS ? What do Plants make when they do PHOTOSYNTHESIS ?

EQUATION FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS CO 2 + H2O +H2O +H2O +H2O +ENERGY C 6 H 12 O 6 + O2O2O2O2 CARBON DIOXIDE WATER GLUCOSE OXYGEN

What affects the rate of PHOTOSYNTHESIS ? Water Carbon Dioxide Light Intensity Temperature

HETEROTROPHS Cannot get energy directly from the sun Eat food to get energy

How do organisms get ENERGY from food?

CELLULAR RESPIRATION All cells take food and turn it into energy the organism can use Takes place in the mitochondria of cells What organelle does cellular respiration take place in?

What is ATP ? What do cells use ATP for?

ATP ATP is a molecule inside cells that acts like a rechargeable battery carrying small amounts of instantly available energy PPP

ATP Cellular Respiration makes ATP by using ENERGY to add a phosphate to a molecule called ADP PP ENERGY P

ATP The ENERGY is stored in the chemical bond between the second and third phosphate PPP ENERGY

ATP When the bond breaks ENERGY is RELEASED for the cell to use PPP ENERGY

EQUATION FOR RESPIRATION C 6 H 12 O 6 + GLUCOSE O2O2O2O2 OXYGEN CO 2 + CARBON DIOXIDE H2O +H2O +H2O +H2O +ENERGY WATER ATP

How Does the Equation for PHOTOSYNTHESIS Relate to the Equation for CELLULAR RESPIRATION?

How Does the Equation for PHOTOSYNTHESIS CO 2 + CARBON DIOXIDE Relate to the Equation for CELLULAR RESPIRATION? CO 2 + CARBON DIOXIDE

How Does the Equation for PHOTOSYNTHESIS CO 2 + H2O +H2O +H2O +H2O + CARBON DIOXIDE WATER Relate to the Equation for CELLULAR RESPIRATION? CO 2 + CARBON DIOXIDE H2O +H2O +H2O +H2O + WATER

How Does the Equation for PHOTOSYNTHESIS Relate to the Equation for CELLULAR RESPIRATION? The reactants used in photosynthesis are the products made in cellular respiration The products made in photosynthesis are the reactants used in cellular respirationThe reactants used in photosynthesis are the products made in cellular respiration The products made in photosynthesis are the reactants used in cellular respiration

EXERCISE AND ENERGY Exercise takes energy Organisms get energy from cellular respiration Cellular respiration takes oxygen This is why you tend to breathe hard when you use a lot of energy—Your cells are trying to get enough oxygen to get the energy.

AEROBIC Aerobic means that it uses oxygen Cellular respiration is aerobic Some exercises are considered aerobic because your body is using energy at a slower pace so that your body can get enough oxygen to perform cellular respiration

What happens when cells cannot get enough OXYGEN?

ANAEROBIC Anaerobic means that it does NOT use oxygen FERMENTATIONIf there is not enough oxygen to perform cellular respiration, then FERMENTATION occurs FERMENTATIONFERMENTATION allows organisms to get energy when oxygen is not available Lactic acid fermentation occurs in animals Alcoholic fermentation occurs in plants

ANAEROBIC Some exercises are considered anaerobic because your body is using energy at a FASTER pace so that your body CANNOT get enough OXYGEN to perform cellular respiration For example: during short, fast races you might get a burning feeling in your leg muscles because of a build up in lactic acid (made during fermentation)
