Definition Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. The Articles — a, an, and the — are adjectives.Articles
The Adjective forms are known as the positive, the comparative, and the superlative.
The comparative and Superlative are used to compare, also known as Degree of Comparisons. We use the comparative for comparing two things That is a good book. This is a better book and the superlative for comparing three or more things. Which of the three is the best book? He made a bad choice. She made a worse choice. They made the worst choice of all.
The comparative forms of most adjectives, however, are formed by adding the suffixes -er and -est, or by placing the words more and most in front of the positive form. There are 5 rules to form these adjectives comparative forms.
1. One syllable words form the comparative by adding -er and -est: PositiveComparativeSuperlative Brave Small Dark braver Smaller darker bravest smallest darkest
2. Two-syllable words that end in -y, -le, and -er form the comparative by adding -er and - est : PositiveComparativeSuperlative Pretty Happy Noble Clever prettier happier nobler cleverer prettiest happiest noblest cleverest
WWith some two-syllable words, the writer must consider custom and ease of pronunciation. CCase No. 1 two syllable words that have the accent on the first syllable form the comparative by adding -er and -est. Ex. common, cruel, pleasant, quiet. BUT tasteless, more tasteless, most tasteless. CCase No. 2 Some two-syllable words that have the accent on the second syllable form the comparative by adding -er and -est: Example: polite, profound, BUT: bizarre, more bizarre, most bizarre.
3. Words of more than two syllables form the comparative with more and most: PositiveComparativeSuperlative Beautiful Resonant Intelligent Adorable more beautiful more resonant more intelligent more adorable most beautiful most resonant most intelligent most adorable
4. Past participles used as adjectives form the comparative with more and most: PositiveComparativeSuperlative Crooked Broken Damaged Defeated more crooked more broken more damaged more defeated most crooked most broken most damaged most defeated
