New Jazz Works Deadline: March 6, 2015 Notification: June 2015

New Jazz Works is a CMA grant program that supports professional U.S. Jazz ensembles to create, perform, and if desired, record new works. This program is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

NJW is a three-year grant CMA offers grantees three years to complete a New Jazz Works project; the grant period runs July 1, 2015–June 30, 2018.

Four components to NJW Core: Creation and Performance (up to $19,000) Continued Life (up to $12,000) Administrative Support (up to $3,000) CMA National Conference

Core offers $9,000 fee to the composer for the creation of a new work of substantial length $1,000 per musician for rehearsing and performance of the premiere plus one additional performance of the new work in the U.S. or its territories

Up to $12,000 for three public concerts in different venues, or two public concerts in different venues plus an audio and/or video recording Activities may take place worldwide Continued Life offers

Administrative Support offers Up to $3,000 for a booking agent a recording other administrative expenses

CMA National Conference complimentary registration for the ensemble leader travel/hotel subsidy for an ensemble leader who lives more than 200 miles from New York

For example, if you are a quintet your New Jazz Work grant = $29,000 $9,000 composer fee (Core) $5,000 ensemble fee (Core) $12,000 (Continued Life) $3,000 (Administrative Support) plus one complimentary registration to the CMA National Conference

An ensemble is eligible if: it consists of 2-10 professional musicians (student groups are not eligible) it is based in the U.S. or its territories the leader is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

it includes improvisation as an integral part of its composition and performance it is a CMA Organization-level member Eligibility, cont’d.

it has no overdue reports or financial obligations to CMA it has waited 12 months from completion of a previous New Jazz Works grant

Similarly, a composer may appear on either New Jazz Works or Classical Commissioning, not both may not have any outstanding obligations to CMA

The composer may be either a performing member of the ensemble or a guest is an individual (not a group) must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.

Your CD-R Work Sample must be in CD-R format must feature a single work on each track may contain music from a live concert, studio/home recording, and/or commercial disc tracks may be edited an/or excerpted

must feature all or the majority of the personnel listed on page one of your application. must be examples of small ensemble music; solo and music for 11+ musicians is not acceptable. Your two ensemble tracks

must feature small ensemble music performed either by the applicant ensemble or another group require a score excerpt, lead sheet, or graphic notation for track 3; this is optional for track 4 Your composer tracks

Completing, cont’d. 1 copy of a document verifying the U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status of the ensemble leader, or the ensemble’s 501 (c)(3) designation

Completing, cont’d. If applicable, 1 copy of the Memorandum of Understanding between ensemble and guest composer (see sample in guidelines) a document verifying the U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status of the guest composer

The panel judges for artistic excellence of the ensemble compositional expertise of the composer

You choose this spring you may apply to New Jazz Works or Classical Commissioning; not both early fall, you may consider applying to the CMA/ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming and Residency Partnership Program.
