CM4SH: A CROSS HEMISPHERIC PROJECT ABOUT CONCEPTUAL MODELS (CM) Veronika Zwatz-Meise Vesa Nietosvaara Societal benefits of user-focused communication of satellite data, products and services

CM4SH: Conceptual Models for Southern Hemisphere 2 different entry points: – The Method of Conceptual Models (CM) Extension from Northern Hemisphere (Europe) to Southern Hemisphere – Net of Virtual Laboratories – Centres of Excellence Joint work on the CM topic Groups benefitting from combination of satellite data in CMs: – The Meteorological training sector Students and teacher – The Meteorological forecast centres More efficient work by combining satellite data with many other data better understanding of weather systems → Nowcasting, warnings → Benefit for user of weather forecasts

Conceptual Models A conceptual model describes essential features of a meteorological phenomenon and identifies the principal processes taking place

Conceptual Models SatManu - Europe

WMO: Centres of Excellence – Virtual Laboratories Argentina (Buenos Aires and Cordoba), Australia (Melbourne), Barbados (Bridgetown), Brazil (Cachoeira Paulista), China (Beijing and Nanjing), Costa Rica (San Jose), Kenya (Nairobi), Morocco (Casablanca), Niger (Niamey), Oman (Muscat), Republic of Korea (Jincheon), the Russian Federation (Moscow and St Petersburg) South Africa (Pretoria). Virtual Laboratory for Training and Education in Satellite Meteorology (VLab) is a global network of specialized training centres and meteorological satellite operators working together to improve the utilisation of data and products from meteorological and environmental satellites.

CM 4 SH is built up by: Participants from Australia, S-Africa, Argentina and Brazil: Vlab + universities + weather services Lead, Support and knowledge transfer from the European CM group and vice versa Supervisors Goals of CM4SH To collect, create and share resources about CMs for Southern Hemisphere. To increase the operational forecasters’ understanding of the weather systems with the help of CMs. To establish a virtual team that can work together and support each other despite the distance, team members trusting and inspiring each other.

Preliminary/Draft Inventory of CMs for SH

Föhn Elements from SatManu Zonda Elements for CM4SH

COL: Different kind of cut-off lows occurring together with a surface cold front and initiating wave development over the continent Upper level vortices: Cut off Low SatManu/Europe: typical Cut off process

Comparison Rapid cyclogenesis: N-Atlantic ↔ SE Australia Mutual inspiration: South Atlantic Brazilian Convergence Zone ↔ European Baroclinic Zone

Goals – reached aims (Topics very much based on the experience of Argentina presented on CalMet) Inspection of the actual training needs of forecasters Promote the activities of CoE for the relevant regions Reinforce interaction between institutions (university – weather services) and other countries (Argentina with: Brazil, Chile) Be assisted by the European experts  benefit from their background Introduction of new relevant numerical parameters Thank you for your attention ! Hoping for a continuation of project phases
