Where did I get Slavery from the book? Pierce Butler held the largest slavery auction in America. Emma gets sold to Miss Henfield so Pierce could pay off his debt due to gambling. Emma escapes to freedom to Philadelphia.

Slavery? What is it? Slavery: the state or condition of being a slave; a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune.

What is a Plantation like? The slaves had hard work to do, they had to get up at 4am to bring crops in from the plantations and they only had a 15 minute break. If they were late for work they would have been whipped. They worked very long hours, even the young children had to work long hours as well. The women what are pregnant had to work in till the baby is born. If the slaves didn't work hard enough they would be whipped by the overseer. At the end of the day, the slaves still had to do chores for the slave owner. They also had to prepare there own evening meals. Sometimes they were given pots and pans for cooking, but more often they had to make their own. They followed this routine everyday, apart from Sundays

Slave Auctions There were two kinds of auctions “Grab and Go” and “May the highest bidder win”. Typically the largest slaves would go first because they were believed to be able to do more work. Families were split up and sold to different owners for different costs.

How were slaves treated? Health- Closely associated with their bad diets were problems with their health. The high temperatures and rates of humidity were dangerous for everyone living in the south, but particularly the blacks because they performed back-breaking labor in the conditions. When a slave got sick, he or she was not treated immediately, if at all.

How were slaves treated? Food- Slaves did not get the proper nutrition for all of straining work they did all day and into the night. Without receiving wholesome and well-rounded meals, their immune systems suffered.
