Life as a Slave

Field Slaves Duties were to harvest the following: Tobacco Rice Sugar Cotton Buying slaves was cheaper than paying wages to workers.

House Slaves The 2 nd most elite of slaves. (The elite slaves were those who became overseers.) House slaves were entitled to better food and clothing. Had the chance to be treated as an owner’s child. Many slaves were promised their freedom after their owner died however, few actually attained it.

Overseers The more plantation land, the more overseers were needed. Overseers were used to maximize profits. Despite the perception, many blacks worked as overseers as well. Used extreme punishments to get slaves to work. An elite class for blacks.

In this picture, who do you think would cost more?

Slave Breeding Female slaves were worth more at auctions due to their reproductive abilities. Slave breeders would match women with the strongest males in the hopes for strong off- spring.

Mulattoes Mulattoes are the children between a slave and their owner. Their treatment was varied.

Slave Ownership Most plantations were owner-operated and the planters often worked in the fields. 88% of slave owners owned 20 slaves or less. Death rate among slaves was high. Child-bearing started around the age of 13.

Slave Branding Put tags on slaves for two reasons: 1) Demoralize slaves 2) If slaves ran away, everyone would know who they belong to. Reinforced that slaves were just property.

Runaways/Underground Railroad Runaways – Those who attempt to get their freedom by running away. Main problem: Having to leave family and friends behind. Travel under nightfall. Penalty for being caught was a whipping or death. Underground Railroad – Helped escaped slaves from the South. Went through a network of houses from the south through the north.
