With sports and games, jouer is followed by à and a definite article. Je joue au tennis. (I play tennis). Les garçons jouent aux cartes. (The boys are playing cards.)

Jouer is followed by de and a definite article when talking about playing a musical instrument. Pierre joue du piano. (Pierre plays the piano.) Anne joue de la guitare. (Anne plays the guitar.)
