Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Promote and Publicize FCCLA! is an individual or team event that recognizes participants who develop an FCCLA promotion and publicity campaign to raise awareness and educate the school, parents, and members of the community about the importance of FCCLA and Family and Consumer Sciences education. The goal of this event is to provide FCCLA members with communications experience to make a difference by increasing membership, developing partnerships, gaining Alumni & Associate involvement, promoting Family and Consumer Sciences education, gathering school and community support for their chapter, and contributing to the longevity of the organization and the relevance of its opportunities for members. Additionally, this event will increase member awareness of careers in communications and public relations.

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Getting Started Project Ideas – develop a project that meets a need of your chapter Increase chapter membership Gain school/community support for your chapter Develop a corporate sponsor program Establish/Reenergize a strong chapter alumni network Promote Family and Consumer Sciences education to students, school administration, or the government

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org The FCCLA Planning Process The Planning Process is always the best place to start a project. Get a copy from your adviser or find it on the National FCCLA Web site, www.fcclainc.org

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Sample Project This project was created for a high school with 200 students in a rural community. All students took a Family and Consumer Sciences course during their 8th grade year, so everyone is eligible to join FCCLA. The chapter officers started this project in their July planning meeting and two of them have decided to continue with it as a STAR Event. The chapter had about 30 members the previous year and would like to grow. They have seen a decline in membership over the past few years and would like to reverse the situation. In addition, they have found that several people still believe FCCLA is for cooking and sewing. They want to change this mindset by showing students that FCCLA can be relevant to their lives.

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Identify Concerns Chapter membership has decreased steadily over the past three years. Students in our school are not seeing the great benefits FCCLA can bring to their lives.

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Set a Goal To increase chapter membership by seven students. To educate members and non-member students about how FCCLA can benefit them at various stages of life. To creatively advertise FCCLA to non-members

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Form a Plan In addition to chapter events for members, we will hold events for each class that are relevant to their current situations. Events will be promoted with FCCLA materials so they see that FCCLA and students will be given “Join NHS FCCLA” kits at the events. We will have prizes for students who join FCCLA during the events. These are the events we will hold: Freshmen – Welcome to High School Party Sophomores – Prepare to Drive Teen/Parent Night Juniors – Life After High School Information Seniors – Career Fair

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Act We developed: “Join NHS FCCLA” kits 4 advertisement campaigns for the 4 events a chapter website a public FCCLA recognition board in the NHS commons In addition to our pre-planned events, we opened parts of our two (fall and spring) community service projects up to the whole NHS student body.

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Other Forms of Publicity Used FCCLA Board in NHS Commons Sidewalk chalk outside school before events Announcements in the school’s daily bulletin Lunch One-Acts on the day of events Flyers on car windshields The FCCLA board publicly displays the achievements of FCCLA members and advertises for upcoming events. The recognition section contains announcements of success, newspaper clippings, and pictures and is updated as needed. The advertisement section is updated every other week to keep people interested. There is also always information available for students to take on how to join FCCLA. The chapter officers “go chalking” after dark the night before events, as long as there’s not snow or ice on the ground and it’s not raining. They draw advertisements for events in high traffic areas to remind people and catch the interest of those who aren’t aware of the event. The officers attained permission from the school principal at the beginning of the year to advertise this way. Announcements are placed in the school bulletin one week prior to events and run everyday until the event. Officers or chapter volunteers act out scenes during lunch to advertise for events. It catches a lot attention! Officers and chapter volunteers take 5 minutes of their lunch on the day before events for upper classmen to stick extra locker notes under the windshield wipers of cars in the student parking areas.

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Follow Up Success! We exceeded last year’s chapter membership by ten students! But we also learned some things we can do differently in the future: Have an event at the end of the year for 8th grade students so they can get involved from the very beginning of their high school experience. Have a “Family and Consumer Sciences Classes” night for freshmen and sophomores at the end of the year. It’s easier to get current FCS students involved than non-students, but students don’t really think about electives in our school until they are upper classmen. We have to be as diligent about retaining members as we are about recruiting them. We need to have a follow up meeting at the end of the year for FCCLA members to tell us how we can make the organization better for their needs and to invite them to sign up for next year.

Promote and Publicize FCCLA! www.fcclainc.org Evaluating Your Project The new STAR Events rubrics are a great way to make sure that your project is up to the highest standards. Use the rubric as you prepare your portfolio and speech to make sure you are ready to compete!
