 1. SUPPORT – it supports the softer tissues and provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles.  2. PROTECTION – bones protect internal organs.
Skeletal System Unit 2 Pt 1. Introduction 0 The skeletal system is made up of 4 components: 0 Ligaments 0 Tendons 0 Joints 0 Bones.
 There are 206 bones in an adult human.  The human skeleton is divided into two parts  Axial; includes skull ribs and vertebral column  Appendicular;
Connective tissue Major types of connective tissue: Areolar Adipose Fibrous connective Bone Cartilage Blood Hemopoietic.
Skeletal System. What is the skeletal system?  Skeletal system consists of bones, teeth, joints, & structures that connect bones to other bones or muscles.
The Skeletal System. 5 Functions Of The Skeletal System  Support: Gives form to the body.  Protection: Protects vital internal organs, acts as a shield.
The Skeletal System. The skeletal system consists of: 1. Bones 2. Cartilage 3.Connective tissue ***There are about 206 bones in an adult.
BODY TISSUES The four main types of body tissues are: 1) Epithelium – Sheets of tissue that line and cover, provide protection specialized for absorption/secretion.

Types of bones

Cross section of bone

Functions of bone Support: Bones provide a framework for the attachment of muscles and other tissues. Protection: Bones such as the skull and rib cage protect internal organs from injury. Movement: Bones enable body movements by acting as levers and points of attachment for muscles. Mineral storage: Bones serve as a reservoir for calcium and phosphorus, essential minerals for various cellular activities throughout the body. Blood cell production: The production of blood cells, or hematopoiesis, occurs in the red marrow found within the cavities of certain bones. Energy storage: Lipids, such as fats, stored in adipose cells of the yellow marrow serve as an energy reservoir.

Composition of bone matrix The composition of bone matrix is 1/3 organic and 2/3 inorganic matter. The organic matter, synthesized by the osteoblasts (bone-forming cells), is collagen and proteins like glycosaminoglycan, proteoglycan, and glycoprotiens. The inorganic matter is mostly crystallized calcium phosphate salts and calcium carbonate, and a few other minerals. Bone matrix is a composite which means it has characteristics of the hard, strong inorganic matter and some flexibility and give from the collagen.
