4 Bone Bone is living material –Made from minerals and connective tissue How do the minerals get there?  Osteoblast specialized cells that deliver minerals to bones

5 Compact bone No visible openings

6 Spongy Bone Have a lot of open spaces Provides most of the support and strength for the bone

7 Marrow Stores fat in adult bone

8 Bone Growth  Most bone begins as cartilage tissue  Cartilage is replaced by bone over time.  Children have growth plates to allow bone to reach adult size.

9 Joints Place where 2+ bones meet. Allows for body movement when muscles contract.

10 Ligaments Strong “elastic” bands of connective tissues. Connect bones in a joint Many bones are “capped” with ligaments = cushions impact
