Skeletal System Unit 2 Pt 1

Introduction 0 The skeletal system is made up of 4 components: 0 Ligaments 0 Tendons 0 Joints 0 Bones

Introduction 0 Ligaments 0 Made of fibrous connective tissue 0 Connect Bones to Bones 0 Tendons 0 Made of fibrous connective tissue 0 Connect Muscles to Bones 0 Joints 0 Where a bone touches another bone

Bones: Tissues 0 Spongy bone 0 Compact bone 0 Articular cartilage 0 Marrow 0 Coverings 0 Endostenum 0 Periostenum

Bones: Anatomy 0 Epiphysis 0 Diaphysis 0 Medullary Cavity

Bones: 4 Functions 0 Support and Protection 0 Body Movement 0 Blood Cell Formation 0 Storage of Inorganic Salts Also: indicate poison or piracy

Bones: Support and Protection 0 Bones provide all the rigid structure and the shape of our bodies. 0 Bones also protect our internal organs 0 Skull/Brain 0 Ribs/Lungs and Heart 0 Pelvis/Reproductive Organs 0 Spine/ ?

Bones: Body Movement 0 Our muscles attach to our bones to produce movement. 0 Bones and joints act as simple levers. 0 Muscles produce forces to generate movement.

Bones: Blood Cell Formation 0 Blood cells are produced in bone marrow 0 Yellow marrow stores energy in the form of fat. It can be converted to red marrow if the need arises. 0 Red Marrow 0 Found Primarily in the spongy tissue of flat bones (i.e. Ribs, hips, sternum) 0 Red color comes from hemoglobin 0 Produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets

Bones: Storage of Inorganic Salts 0 Our bones serve as a reservoir of calcium for the body. 0 When we are low on calcium, osteoclasts will break down bone tissue to release calcium into the blood stream. 0 When we have an excess of calcium, osteoblasts will store it by adding tissue to our bones. 0 Our bones also serve to absorb poisonous heavy metals which can be released later and cause illness.
