Grime Scene Investigation By Lucie, Lily, Daniel and Monambi Team Wobbegong Ferncourt PS, Marrickville

Introduction On the fourth of June 2008, nine students from Ferncourt P.S. attended an environmental excursion to Sylvania P.S. and the surrounding area. This slide show is about the activities that we did at the excursion.

The River Cruise When we arrived at Sylvania P.S., we had a brief run down of the day, then were taken to a boat for a cruise along St. Georges River. The St. Georges River is 50 kilometres long and the estuary is one and a half kilometres wide. Taren Point is an island that is connected to the mainland when silt washes down the river.

Plankton Study We studied three different types of plankton; Foraminifera, which is in the bottom right corner. Chaeotoceros Affinis, which is in the top right corner. We also studied and sketched the Veliger larva of limpert Acmaea.

Fish Dissection When we arrived back on land we conducted a fish dissection. The fish we dissected was the Yellow Fin Bream, which is a carnivore. We cut from the anal passage through the stomach, and laid the fish open. Secondly, we cut out the heart and examined it. We tried to remove the eyes and brain but we didn’t have enough time.

Water Quality Testing Before we went water quality testing, we had a briefing on what types of bad things can be found in water. Firstly there was turbidity (NTU’s), which measure how dirty and muddy the water is. Then there is acidity (pH) which is how much acid is in the water. Then there is temperature (0C) and dissolved oxygen (ppm) Dissolved Oxygen (ppm) 4 ppmlow Acidity (pH)7pHmed Phosphates (ppm) 0.5 ppmlow Temperature (0C) 17 0Cmed Turbidity (NTU’s) 85 NTU’shigh

Water Quality Testing cont. After the briefing we walked under Tom Ugly’s Bridge. We switched between two stations, the biotic study station and the water testing station. We went to the biotic study station first, where we were able to study three native species; the Flounder, the Blue Crab and the Prawn.

Environmental Issues Issues like industrial emissions that aid global warming; storm water drains dumping mud and junk on the valuable sea grass that sustains many forms of life; and boat moorings that hold many boats, all add up to serious environmental issues.

Conclusion After we had finished studying and sketching the animals we went on to the water quality testing and added tablets to the water to find out how much of certain things there were in the water. After this we walked back to the school.
