Project: D/O

Background Info Salmon require a D/O of more than 9 mg/l. 5 mg/l is considered very poor. 3mg/l and the organism suffer greatly.

Question Does the river now contain enough oxygen to hold and sustain salmon when silt and sediment enters the river in high quantities during and after dam removal?

Hypothesis We think that the river’s oxygen will not support salmon during and after dam removal while silt is in the river.

Procedure 1. Grab materials and quality check. 2. Use GPS to find coordinates of test site. 3. Use multimeter to find dissolved oxygen levels. Refer to multimeder protocol. 4. Record data. 5. Check and record air temperature and time done. 6. Repeat for a total of 5 locations with different amounts of suspended silt.

Data

Conclusion We found that the rivers D/O is high enough for salmon and was sustainable to hold a population. However, we didn’t have a proper method of measuring silt and suspended sediment, so our conclusions are inconclusive!

Differences If we had another chance we would measure the silt and suspended sediment in the water to see if it would effect it differently
