5 pH pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution.[1] Pure water is said to be neutral, with a pH of 7.0 Below 7 is acidic Above 7 is basic Optimal range for most organisms is 6.5 to 8.2

6 Chlorine Added to city drinking water Kills bacteria
Can react with some natural compounds to create dangerous compounds.

7 Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate
Acts as a fertilizer for plants When levels are high, excessive plant growth affects water quality Enters water from human/animal waste, decomposing organic matter, and fertilizer runoff

8 Phosphate Acts as a fertilizer for plants
When levels are high, plants grow and die quickly creating water quality problems

9 Dissolved Oxygen Aquatic animals need dissolved oxygen to live
Below 2 or 1 ppm will not support fish Below 3 ppm are stressful to most organisms 5 – 6 are required for growth
