Step by Step procedure what you should see… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tANTOnXXvUY&feature=related

Station 1 Examine the outside skin tissue. Notice the clear connective tissue that holds the skin to the muscles. A. Describe what the connective tissue looks like. B. Draw a picture to help describe it. 2. Observe the yellowish clumps of fat tissue found on the outside of the skin. A. What do you think is the function of this layer of fat? skin

Adipose Tissue Tissue/body fat found right beneath the skin. Main functions: Store energy, cushion, and insulate.

Station 2 Observe the bundles of pale pink muscle tissue surrounding the bones. Do you see just one muscle or are there many muscles present? How can you tell?

Wing Muscles

Station 3 Use a probe if needed to find the tendons of the chicken wing: the shiny, white tissue at the end of muscles. Tendons connect muscle to bones. Find as many tendons as possible in your chicken wing. Determine where each tendon connects to the bone. Draw & label a picture of a tendon connected to the bone. Describe how it feels.

Station 4 Straighten the chicken wing and hold it horizontally above the tray. Have your partner pull on each of the muscles and note the movement that each muscle causes. Turn the wing upside down and bend the joints. Pull on each muscle and note how the bone moves. Explain how pulling on muscles causes motion. Which muscle is the flexor, which one is the extensor?

Muscles work in Pairs When you pull on the tricep muscle, the chicken wing should straighten. When you pull on the the bicep muscle, the chicken wing should bend.

Station 5 The muscle that bends the upper wing has been cut. How is the wing different from the wing in Station #4? How does a torn muscle affect motion? Motion becomes minimal

Station 6 The muscle has been removed to expose the bones of the chicken wing. Which joints in your body are the same as the ones found in the chicken wing? Ligaments connect bone to bone and can be found where two bones come together. Find the ligaments. Explain what ligaments look like. Hinge Joints; elbow & knee

Station 7 The ligaments at the joints between the upper and lower wing have been cut. Explain how the bones fit into each other. What holds the bones together? What is the role of this structure? Find a long, thin reddish-brown strand of tissue. Pull it aside with the dissecting needle. This strand is a blood vessel. 1. What is the function of he blood vessels around the bones? Cartilage Serves as a channel; canal for O2 & nutrients

Station 8 The material at the end of the bone has been cleaned so that you can see the cartilage. Describe the texture of the ends of the bones at the joints.  where cartilage is found. What occurs when the cartilage at your joints wear away? marrow Without the cushioning effect of cartilage, bones rub together. This causes significant pain & loss of motion. (Osteoarthritis)

Station 9 A bone has been broken into two. Examine the inside. Any soft, red material is bone marrow. Record observations. What is its function? Red marrows function: Make red & white blood cells. marrow
