Year 8: Autumn Independent Learning Challenge What's inside… Art & Design Department

Art ILC We advise that you bring in a USB stick so that we can save this terms ILC tasks onto it for you.

i Information Autumn Independent Learning Challenge In this Learning Challenge you are going to produce a finished A3 drawing or painting of either a jar or matchbox full of small objects. My Learning Objectives: -To improve and develop my observational drawing skills. To understand each of the formal elements of Art and Design and know how to use them in a drawing task. -To learn how to examine and look at the work of other artists using the ‘formal elements’ and make a comparison between their work and yours. If you need help or need to use our materials then you can come to Art club which takes place every Monday Lunchtime with Mrs Foster.

This project is based on a competition to see how many small objects you can fit inside a glass jar.

JUST FOR FUN… How many different small objects can you fit into your jam jar so that the lid can still be closed? The current winner of the ‘jam jar competition’ managed to fit 143 objects into their jar. Can you do any better? The rest of this drawing project will be based on your jam jar or matchbox ‘small object collection.’ ? QUESTION ?

Introducing the Formal Elements of Art & Design… As artists we use the formal elements to show how visual components go together to form any work of art. ? QUESTION ? Can you work out what the 8 formal elements are below? Use a ‘Google search’ to help you! Write them down on the back of your drawings which you will do later on in this ILC! TASK 1: 1a: Make an A5 LINE pencil drawing of your jar, remember this is line only so don’t shade it in! 1b: Make an A5 TONAL pencil drawing of your jar, remember this time to add shading to it! 1c: Make an A5 COLOUR TONAL drawing of your jar. Use can use any colour materials of your choice. This task looks at the formal element of ‘LINE’This task looks at the formal element of ‘TONE’This task looks at the formal element of ‘Colour’

TASK 2: 2a: Collect a group of textured objects and place them into a drinking glass. 2b: Make an A5 TONAL drawing of your textured objects in your jar, box or glass using a BLACK BIRO PEN to draw with. Remember this time to add shading to it! This task looks at the formal element of ‘TEXTURE’

TASK 3 You are now going to produce a final A4 colour drawing of the objects falling out of your jar – this drawing will focus on the formal element of composition.

Task 4: Presenting your drawings… Front of Line drawing Front of Tonal drawing Front of Colour drawing Front of Texture drawing Remember to tape from behind so you cant see the join! Using sellotape, join each one of your drawings together. Tape the paper from the back so you can not see it. You may even want to mount your drawings as shown below.

Print out this sheet and complete your self evaluation. Remember you are identifying the strengths and weaknesses in your work, before setting a new target for you to work towards in your next project! Glue this sheet onto the back of your drawings before handing it in to your teacher!

Finally…. Write down the number of objects which you managed to fit into your jar and a list of the eight ‘Formal Elements’ which you looked at in slide 5. Do this on the back of one of your drawings.

Task 1: - Completed the 3 A5 drawings of the items in your jar. (Line, Tone & Colour) Task 2: - Completed the A5 texture drawing in black biro. Task 3: - Completed the A4 colour composition drawing of the items falling our of your jar. Task 4: - Joined all of your drawings together. CHECK LIST….
