Select Team Man Up Offense: Blue Jay

Blue Jay: Level of Play “Blue Jay” is slightly more advanced than “Big Red”. It requires simultaneous movements that may be difficult for some teams. Players are also require to play a variety of different spots depending on the rotation, so they need to be proficient with both their right and left hands. Once the play is mastered, it is highly effective at all levels and can be run repeatedly without needing to reset. Level of Play (Blue Jay)

Blue Jay: Set-up Blue Jay starts in a 3-3 and remains in a 3-3 following each rotation. X1 and X3 start on the high right and left wings about 12 yards in front of the GLE and 7 yards to the side. X2 aligns himself in the middle of the field about 15 yards above the GLE. X5 is on the crease about 3-5 yards above GLE. X4 and X6 are on the left and right wings about 3-5 yards above GLE and approximately 7 yards to the side… Set-up (Blue Jay)

Blue Jay: Set Up X2 should be a good ball-handler and the teams best decision maker, as he will have to make reads and skip passes. The rest of the players should be comfortable as both shooters and crease players. Set-up (Blue Jay Continued)

Blue Jay: Set-up X6 X4 X5 X3 X1 X2

Blue Jay: Execution The ball moves around until it gets to either X6 or X4 (in this case we will run the play off X6). When X6 receives the pass, he is going to carry the ball up. X5 is going to follow, rolling off the crease to replace X6. As X6 carries, X3 is going to cut to the crease. X6 wants to look to X3 on the cut, or he can reverse it to X5. Otherwise, he should look to throw ahead to X2. X2 can then decide whether to skip to X2 or reverse the ball to X4 or X1. Execution (Blue Jay)

Blue Jay: Execution X6 X4 X5 X3 X1 X2

Blue Jay: Execution X6 wants to look at X3 on the cut, X5 on the roll-off, or he can throw ahead to X2, who can decide whether to re-direct or skip to X1 and X4 on the backside.

3-3 Rotation: Execution The real benefit of the 3-3 Rotation, is the field is always balanced after every rotation, so the play can be run continuously from one side to the other. Execution (Continued)

Blue Jay (Run on Consecutive Plays) The 3-3 Rotation is a balanced, continuous man- up set that requires players to be very competent using both their right and left hands.

Blue Jay: Final Thoughts After the initial movements happen and a shot takes place, X2 needs to read the defense and look for skip lanes. The two bases (they will rotate) will most likely be open for skip passes. ** The base players in the 3-3 want to be sure to stay low enough that they can exchange the ball behind the cage. This will force the defense to turn their heads and play behind the cage as well as in front. 3Blue Jay: Final Thoughts
