Face Off Set Up Each team has 10 players on the field.
The wing Middies must start behind the line and can move on the whistle. The Attack and Defense must stay in the box until one of the Middies picks up the ball and the ref calls “possession.” If the ball rolls into the box, the Attack and Defense are released and can join the play/leave the box.

Restarts If a ball goes out on the sideline, the coaches can call for a “horn” when the ref’s arms are up. The horn allows for dead ball substitutions. If the ball goes out on the end line, there is no horn. Restart occurs when the team that is given possession picks up the ball and steps in. On a pass, the ball is turned over when it goes out of bounds. On a shot, the team with the player closes to the ball when it goes out of bounds gets possession of the ball. This is why we need a back up behind the goal. One the restart, defensive players must be 5yrd away from the man with the ball. Usually the ref will not enforce this rule unless the player with the ball asks for “5 yrds.”

Clear Timing The goalie has 4 seconds to get out of his crease with the ball. The team clearing the ball has 20 seconds to get the ball over the half line. Once over the half line, the clearing team has 10 seconds to get the ball into the box. Every time the team with the ball steps out of the box, the 10 second count restarts. If the clearing team does not make it in these times “failure to advance” is called and it is an immediate turnover. Drop the ball and get into the defensive set.

Legal Hits/Checks Body checks should be with the shoulder into the front or side of the other player. Hitting in the back or extending with the hands through the hit can result in a turnover or penalty. Body check can only occur within 5 yrds of the ball. Stick checks should be on the opponents sticks or hands holding the stick. Checks to the elbow, body, or head can result in a penalty. Pushing or grabbing a player with a free hand is illegal. Impeding the movement of another player with body or stick is considered holding and illegal. Setting a moving pick (basketball style) is illegal. players feet must be clearly set for a proper pick.

Delayed Penalties When there is a penalty, the ref will throw a flag in the air. If the ball is on the ground, the play is whistled dead. If the team that the penalty is on has the ball the play is whistled dead. If the other team has the ball play is still live. If the ball is brought into the offensive box, the team cannot take the ball out of the box or play is dead. If the ball is dropped to the ground play is dead. When play resumes the ball is given to the team without the penalty regardless of reason for play ending.
