A Trip to Colonial Days by Jerri, Colton, Hannah, and Peter Our group took a trip to colonial days, but we didn’t go in a time machine. We went by visiting web pages. In this slideshow we will show you what we learned.

Colonial Homes The first colonial homes are made with bark and branches.The roof is made of straw and vines. Inside was a fireplace, one main room, and a small upstairs. An important item was a fireplace. There were few tables and chairs.

Clothing Some of the men wore doublets, cuffs, breeches, stockings, felt hats, ruffs, and shoes. The women wore waist coats, aprons, petticoats, and shoes. The children wore gowns till they were seven. l

Food The colonial kids ate bread, corn, hen, eggs, and duck. In their days girls had a special place to learn how to set the table. Most of the people grew their food. Their most important meal was dinner.

Schools The first schools were called dame schools. The books were called hornbooks. The hornbooks were covered with horn skin.The hornbooks had the alphabet, letters, and verses. Housewives were the first teachers. The schools were made out of logs. Saturday was a school day.

Family Life People worked very hard. People helped each other. Families were very large. Families lived in the same houses. Men hunted for stuff to eat. They worked at special jobs. Women and girls raised crops They took care of their gardens.They made candles and soap. They wove cloth to make clothes. All children had chores.

Transportation In Colonial days people used horses, sleds, wagons and boats, but they mostly walked. Travel was difficult and slow. People didn’t go far except for Government officials, merchants and planters. You could go faster in a boat. They used a large sled when it is snowing. It was cold to ride in but easier than walking.

Jobs and Tools Men wore wigs back then so there were wig makers. The blacksmith made things of metal. Black was his first name because he made black metal. Gunsmiths made and repaired guns. Silversmiths worked with gold and silver. Coopers made buckets, pails, and barrels. The wheelwrights made wheels. The wheelwright wheels were wood.

Entertainment They had lots of things to entertain themselves with like nine pins which is like bowling, hopscotch, tag, checkers, marbles, and sack races. They played Leap frog. They flew kites, went fishing,and went swimming. They swung on swings, and took walks. They played with spinning tops, and read. They played ball games. They did the Cat’s Cradle. They wrestled, fox hunted, and played on sleds in the winter. The girls played with Rag dolls, Corn Husk dolls, and they had journals to write in.

Likes Girls wore dresses then and the girls wear dresses now. They ate some of the same food that we eat. They had a fireplace and an upstairs and so do we. The past and now both had schools. In colonial times they had chalkboards and we have chalkboards. They had jobs and we have jobs. They made and repaired guns and so do we. People worked very hard and we kind of work hard. People helped each other and we help each other. They read back then and had journals to write in. They rode horses and so do we.

Some of the clothing is different. They cook in a fire place but we cook on a stove. Families lived in the same houses and we don’t live in the same houses because there would not be enough room in the houses. People in colonial days did not have electricity so they could not play games that involves batteries. They mostly walked and they didn’t have cars. They used hornbooks in school. We use books and paper. Most of the jobs they had in colonial days are now done in factories. Our houses have many rooms. Differences
