Why do a PhD?

Contrary to popular belief, a PhD is not intellectually difficult but it calls for discipline and stamina.

Choose the University, choose the supervisor, choose your PhD programme!

Unstructured PhD Programmes Unstructured PhD programme – a doctorate in Europe traditionally involved a one-on-one relationship between the master and the apprentice. „Doktorvater” Majority of supervisors were primarily task-focused coupled with some concern with the humane aspects of supervision, there was little evidence of innovation and reflection.

Structured PhD Programmes In the US – a norm In Europe – ? 2007 – 25% of the European institutions had established structured doctoral programmes 2010 – 65% of students have multiple advisors and administrators to guide them, receive formal training and scientific and soft skills – broader education than any single supervisor could provide
