What is Title I Parent’s Rights Under Title I Parental Involvement Plan Parent-Student Compact Parent Advisory Council Parent Resource Center Programs at Longfellow Tonight’s Topics

DID YOU KNOW? Longfellow is a partially federally funded school through the Title I program. Title I is a part of the No Child Left Behind Law. Title I requires that schools create a positive and supportive learning environment that result in high levels of achievement for all students.

WHAT IS TITLE 1?  Title 1 is the nation’s largest assistance program for schools. It provides funding for increasing student achievement in schools selected on the basis of the economic level of families in a schools attendance zone.  Title 1 funds supplement local and state educational programs to ensure all students achieve in all academic areas. The Title 1 program offers a variety of services which may include additional teachers, support staff, extra time for instruction, resource materials, smaller classes, and additional training for staff.  Title 1, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) significantly raises expectations for states, local districts, and schools in that all students will meet, or exceed state standards in Math and Science by 2014.

PURPOSE OF TITLE 1  The purpose of Title 1 is to:  Help every child receive a high quality education  Build capacity for parent involvement  Provide professional development  Meet the requirements of Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA)

PARENT’S HAVE THE RIGHT TO Ask for meetings: Parent/Teacher Conferences Review the results of annual parent involvement effectiveness survey. Review the school’s achievement data. Develop and review the parent involvement plan within the student achievement plan.

Every Title I school must develop a parent involvement plan with parental assistance. A copy of the plan will be on the school’s website. TITLE I PARENT INVOLVEMENT PLAN

PARENT-SCHOOL COMPACT A written commitment must be developed each year indicating how all members of the school, including parents, teachers, principals, students and concerned community members, agree to share responsibility for student learning. The compact describes the responsibilities of the school, parent and student for improved student achievement.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL Each Title I school is required to have a Parent Advisory Council (PAC). The school’s building leadership team works with the PAC representative in developing the Title I Parent Plan and the Parent-School compact.

PARENT CONSULTANT Each Title I school is required to have a Parent Consultant. The Parent Consultant manages the school’s Parent Resource Center and operates the lending library. The Parent Center is open for two hours per day, ten hours per week.

Ways you can be involved: Attend family fun nights Attend all parent teacher conferences Attend Parent Involvement events Volunteer your time at the school Talk to your child about school Check homework nightly and sign agenda Have high expectations for your child
