Presentation transcript:

 My story takes place at a school named St. Catherine’s Catholic School. It is important because most of the important events take place there. It adds meaning to the story because of the stuff they do at the school, like prayers. If the setting changed, then there wouldn’t be any prayers, which is an interesting part of the story. You wouldn’t know how Jessica felt when it was her first day at the Catholic school.

CharacterPhysical Characteristics Adjectives of Personality Text Evidence /Explanation of Adjectives Tom Bender1. Always sweaty 1.Courteous1. He treats Jessica really good. 2. Medium sized (height) 2. friendly2. The way he is towards Jessica. 3. Kind of fat 3. tolerant3. He accepts Jessica the way she is. Jessica Feeney1. Skin is burnt 1. shy1. She doesn’t really talk to other kids. 2. Hair is black 2. courteous2. She treats Tom good. 3. Skin stained in different shades of white pink and red 3. strong3. She has gone through lots of tragedies and survived.

 Jessica Feeney is new,and nobody will talk to her because she is severely burned from a terrible accident. She is now very lonely therefore increasing her solitude. I think this story is Man vs. Society because when Jessica comes to class nobody wants to talk to her because of how she and her burns look. It is a group of people who are against her, not just one person, therefore making it Man vs. Society.

 Tom Bender’s life is turned upside down when Mrs. Tracy announces that a new student will be joining them. When Jessica finally enters the classroom, the students find that something is terribly wrong with her skin. Overtime, Tom finally creates a very special bond with Jessica. Then Mrs. Tracy announces something very shocking.

 Those with courage don’t care what other people think.  Text Evidence 1: Tom goes to Jessica’s house to give her the homework.  Text Evidence 2:tom decides to hold Jessica’s burnt hand while Jeff refuses.  Text Evidence 3:when Jeff calls Tom to explain about the car, he critizes Jessica, and Tom says,” Shut up! ” and hangs up on Jeff.

 This book is told from the point of view of Tom, one of the main characters. In other words, it is told from first person. It helps the reader understand Tom’s feelings and emotions better. This story would not be as interesting if the point of view changed. It also depends on who’s point of view it is being told from. If it is being told by Jessica, I think the book would be way more interesting.

 On the front cover of Firegirl there is a row of paper kids, but one of them appears to be burnt which is Jessica. Only one other paper kid is holding her hand which represents Tom. The other paper kid on other side of her is far away symbolizing Jeff not holding her hand during prayers. It affects the story because if this picture wouldn’t have been there then the readers probably wouldn’t think the book looked interesting or appealing to read.

 I would recommend this book to kids who like realistic fiction. I would recommend this book to kids because it teaches you how to be brave and not give up on life. It is really sad and exciting also. It’s suspenseful. This book shows you how to not judge a person how they look. You should get to know them first because they just might become your new best friend.
