Les articles définis or how to say "the" in French...

Qu'est-ce que c'est? C'est un crayon.

un crayon (a pencil) (It's just any old pencil, not one in particular.)

But what if we want to talk about one pencil in particular? Then we say "the pencil."

In French, there are four different words that mean "the..." le – for masculine nouns that start with a consonant la – for feminine nouns that start with a consonant l' for nouns that start with a vowel les – for all plural nouns (doesn't matter whether masculine, femine or starting with a vowel.)
