THE FACTS The exact numbers of street-connected children globally are hard to know, but it is people estimate that there are tens of millions, some even think as high as 100 million. More than 11 million street children in India 7 million children on the streets of Latin America 300,000 street children in Kenya 600,000 street children in Ethiopia  

THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR STREET CHILDREN 12th April! In 2012 it was celebrated in 37 countries by thousands of street children, charities, businesses, schools.... And Steven Gerrard, Stephen Fry and Danny Boyle The Day was talked about on the TV, radio, Facebook & Twitter   "Working closely with disadvantaged children has made me realise that kids aren't just on the streets in other countries but are suffering right here in the UK. That's why I'm supporting the International Day for Street Children."

WHAT IS THE UNITED NATIONS? The United Nations is an international organisation which 193 countries are members of It helps countries to work together and agree international law, security, rights and development The current Secretary-General is Ban Ki-moon of South Korea The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.

To participate in decisions which affect your lives YOUR RIGHTS AS A CHILD The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which is signed by nearly every country in the world, gives every child the right to: Survival Development Protection from harm To participate in decisions which affect your lives  

WHY THE UNITED NATIONS SHOULD ADOPT THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR STREET CHILDREN Street children have the same rights as every child in the world Often their rights are not realised – they experience violence, they have little access to food, clothing or education Most of the time governments do not do enough to help street children If the United Nations adopts the Day, it puts pressure on everyone to make a positive difference to street children’s lives

WHAT CAN WE ALL DO?  Organisations like the Consortium for Street Children work with governments and the United Nations to change laws and practices so that street children have the same rights as you You can help raise awareness of street children by signing the pledge and finding out more at www.streetchildrenday.org Spread the word! Tell your friends and family about what you have learnt Hold an event at school to celebrate the International Day for Street Children
