Learning Objectives Participants will: Understand how getting the right people contributes to their organization’s success in achieving their mission Know the elements of Standard Area 2: Getting the Right People Be aware of resources that can assist them in implementing this standard Be able to identify next steps they must take to achieve this Standard

Homework Review Each person will share the policy that they reviewed (or wrote) and their assessment of that policy. Once everyone has shared their policy, collectively identify: what stood out common themes lessons learned next steps

Standard Area 2: Getting the Right People Staffing is all about hiring the right people with the right skills at the right time.

Standard Area 2: Getting the Right People Importance : Having committed, motivated, and qualified employees will help an organization achieve its purpose and goals. Costs: There are costs associated with turnover, such as; money, time invested, resources, morale in the office, and productivity. Process/Tools : The recruiting process begins by defining the job, seeking a pool of qualified individuals, selecting the best individual for the position, and finally orienting the individual to the position and to the organization.

Standard Area 2: Getting the Right People 2.1An approved job description is completed for all positions 2.2Recruitment is through an objective, consistent process 2.3Criteria used to select the appropriate individual are established and documented 2.4All individuals external to the organization who are offered a position sign a letter of employment that outlines the working relationship between the individual and the organization

Standard 2.1: An approved job description is completed for all positions Job descriptions document the tasks and activities required of the position in order to fulfill the organization’s strategic and short-term objectives within the current organizational structure. The job description is the foundation for most HR management activities such as recruitment and performance management.

Standard 2.2: Recruitment is through an objective, consistent process The recruitment process is fair and objective so that candidates, whether internal or external, are being assessed using the same criteria. Recruitment will comply with human rights legislation. Recruitment can be done internally and externally.

Standards 2.2 – 2.4 of Getting the Right People Each group will: be assigned a standard (2.2, 2.3, or 2.4) Complete the assigned activity and then… Using the HR Council website as a resource, prepare a wall chart including: —Key ideas —Insights and surprises from small group discussion Report on each standard to the larger group

Standard 2.2 Scenario: You are managing/supervising a staff team within a larger nonprofit organization and you need to hire someone. What steps would you take to do so?

Standard 2.2 Questions for discussion: What factors did you consider when outlining your steps? Are there any factors that might create limits to what you would do or how you would do it? Discuss.

Standard 2.3 Briefly review the following: Generate suggestions for selection questions based on: A.What skills are essential to the position? B.How will you ensure the new employee fits the culture of your organization? C.How will you make certain that your criteria are not discriminatory? D.How will you ensure that your criteria are specific, measurable and job- related? Review online: —Sample interview questions and guidelines —Sample reference check questions

Standard 2.3 Questions for discussion: Are there any questions or tips that surprised you? How does your interview experience compare with the suggestions in the HR Council tools?
