Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 Career Drivers Why did you decide to come to work this morning – what drove you? (Other than the bus driver/your car….!)

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 Career Drivers There are a number of theories on career drivers that try to analyse what people want out of their career. One of these breaks down the drivers into 9 categories: Material rewards: seeking possessions, wealth & high standard of living. Power/Influence: seeking to be in control of people and resources Search for Meaning: seeking to do things which are believed valuable for their own sake Expertise: seeking a high level of accomplishment in a specialised field Creativity: seeking to innovate and be identified with original output What “job” might suit this type of person?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 Career Drivers Affiliation: seeking nourishing relationships with others Autonomy: seeking to be independent and able to make decisions for oneself Security: seeking a solid and predictable future Status: seeking to be recognised, admired, and respected by the community at large We are probably driven by a mixture of two or three of these – and we’re not implying that any of these are better or worse than each other. Which ones do you think relate to you? I’ll add the list as a fileshare to our site, so that you can mull over it again later.

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 Motivation Theory A lot of the theory on motivation derives from the work of Abraham Maslow – an American psychologist. Have you heard of “Maslow’s Theory”? If so – what do you remember about it?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 Maslow’s Theory Survival Social Security Status Self- actualisation Maslow suggested that you can’t move up to the next level until you’ve satisfied the previous one. So, once you have food etc you aim for security, & once you feel secure, you aim to be part of a society etc. But enough theory – let’s move on!

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 OK – so my goal seems to be SMARTer, but what do I need to do to achieve this goal?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 OK – so my goal seems to be SMARTer, but what do I need to do to achieve this goal? I need to ensure that my Wife wants the same (not much problem there I don’t think!) We need to find enough money We therefore need to ensure enough work to find the money We need to block off the time in our diaries We need to agree the location We need to book the holiday We need to pay for the holiday We need to catch the plane etc

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 What would be the result therefore of breaking down a “large” goal into a set of smaller ones (and still stay true to the “SMARTer” condition of each sub-goal)?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 Let’s look at one of the the items on the previous list We need to find enough money This is not a Smarter goal in itself, so let’s try and re-vamp it. We need to find £1500 by the end of July 2004 and another £1500 by the end of June Specific – exact amounts – yes Measurable – exact amounts and dates – yes Acceptable - £3000 is about the going rate for an all-inclusive holiday for 2 I think Realistic – in theory at least – yes (unless something happens that takes priority of course) Timed – specific dates, so yes Exciting – it will be once we’ve got the money! Recorded – again – by the vary action of including it here it’s recorded.

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 So – as I achieve these smaller goals, this would keep me going & keep me on track to reach my overall goal – it would keep me MOTIVATED yes?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 There are one or two things that I would like to look at before we finish this session. The first is a word - the dictionary definition of which is as follows: “ardent and lively interest or eagerness”. Hazard a guess on what that word is?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 ENTHUSIASM! I will let you in to a BIG secret about enthusiasm – it’s highly contagious. So – if you’r enthusiastic, it will rub off on others. Any comments on this? What happens when there’s a lack of enthusiasm?

Wyn Owen – Adain 2003 There is a welsh saying that goes – “Deuparth gwaith ei ddechrau” which translates into “Two thirds of the work is starting it” What are your thoughts on this saying?
