HOW TO SEARCH USING ONLINE DATABASE
Presentation transcript:

1 Online Searching, 4 th ed. Chapter 7 WorldCat.org Search Example 1: Using the Refine Panel to Focus a Broad Search (“medieval life”) pp. 147 Librarian’s Guide to Cultivating Database Skills for Research and Instruction

2 Lots of “sign in” opportunities All the “latest and greatest” – apps, lists, and more In all the excitement, don’t miss these humble – but very useful – menus:

3 (the search suggestions are already pretty interesting) Our unenthusiastic student types in… …and receives – WOW: almost 36,000 results, arranged by (how are they arranged? Go figure it out) – and within the first 10 there are kids’ books, a book from the Bodleian Library (in Oxford, UK), a biography of Abelard (famous medieval guy), a book about women in medieval times, a journal, a film, and a “computer file”…

4

5 The wealth of Format options: More useful for this task, the wealth of Topics represented (and there are even MORE)

6 (I couldn’t resist – you really need to go click all the “Show more” Topic links until they’re all revealed, and then see what titles are associated with some of the topics. Fascinating!) And this… (mwha-ha-ha) You know what this means in medieval times, don’t you? But Computer Science??? (go on, go look. You know you want to!)
