Vikings Matheus Vasconcellos The Columbus School History Project

Introduction Vikings were fierce warriors and seafarers who attacked tows and villages during the 800s and 900s. The Vikings were hated and feared by their victims which isn't at all surprising. Vikings lived in Scandinavia(Sweden, Norway and Denmark.) Vikings attacked in about 350 ships with thousands of armed men, the attack was a totally surprise. This attacks were called raids. A raid is sudden assault or attack, as upon something to be seized or suppressed. The word Viking come from the word vikingr, which means “pirate "or “raider."

Accomplishments Vikings did a lot of accomplishments. Vikings conquered most of western Europe destroying important cities like Kiev, Constantinople and Northwestern France. The Vikings were the first medieval groups who settled in Iceland. The Vikings left a literary legacy. This literary legacy was called The Sagas of the Icelanders. The Sagas of the Icelanders, a collection of stories mostly about the struggles of the first few generations of Vikings in Iceland. Vikings were the first European group to settle in North America. A great accomplishment Vikings made was that they perfected the longboat. Vikings' raids, explorations, and other successes possible helped in the the development of the longboat.

This was the Sagas of the Icelanders. The Sagas of the Icelanders was written in Old Norse, Vikings language. This was a longboat in which the Vikings traveled to make raids.

Other Accomplishments The Vikings sailed from Iceland to Canada. When the Vikings made it there they called it Vinland. Another mayor accomplishments of the Vikings is that they brought the seafaring ship to Europe. They created an extensive trading network as far south to Byzantium. Vikings were extremely intelligent and won their battles with no difficulty. The Vikings had the ability to convince traders. The ability of communicating was very important.

Why is this Topic Studied Today? Vikings are studied in modern times for a lot of reasons. People want to have knowledge of medieval times and its important communities. Vikings are also studied today because they conquered very important cities. Vikings were ruthless and had no mercy. Vikings were intelligent, brave and fearless. Vikings were very important because they terrorized Europe during 100 years. Vikings were the first European group to get to North America. I think Vikings deserve a good impression in modern days because they were disciplined and worked very hard.

What did the Vikings Famous? The Vikings were extremely well known for their fighting skills but mostly because of their naval abilities (military branch that has to do with ships and boats) They were also famous for their raids and conquests both in England and Ireland. The Vikings were highly skilled crafters and woodworkers. With Scandinavian trees, they successfully built cargo ships and more importantly, the fearsome Drakars or Dragon Ship that allowed them to sail as far as Jerusalem and Eastern Asia. This made the Vikings excellent warriors and for all this reasons they gained fame.

Difficulties the Vikings Had They would worry if there was enough food for the next day. Hunting and fishing wasn’t easy in Iceland and the farmers couldn’t plant everything the Vikings ate. They would also face the problem of not pleasing the leader and worry about getting kicked out of the village. Some cities the Vikings attacked were very powerful and it wasn’t easy to defeat them. The Vikings attack to Constantinople wasn’t an easy attack, a lot of Vikings men were killed in the war. After this unpleasant conditions the Vikings started making trading posts over his empire, doing this the Vikings traded some goods and services for food. This was the solution for this problem. The biggest problem the Viking had was a volcano in Iceland. This volcano killed a lot of animals and a lot of Vikings. When the Vikings attacked Spain they were defeated by the moors.

Timeline 793 Vikings attacked England on the English coast. 844 Vikings reached Spain and were defeated by the Moors. 860 First Viking attack on Constantinople. 870 Viking discovered Iceland. 885 The Great Army is formed and defeated Paris. 982 The Vikings discovers Greenland. 986 Colonized Vinland in Canada 1014 The battle of Clontarf, Brian Boru defeats the Vikings in Ireland Death of Edward the confessor The great age of saga writing in Iceland Greenland is taken over by the Norwegians, the decline of the Western and Eastern Settlements.

Impact on Modern World The Vikings left a great impact on todays world. The Vikings discovered Iceland and Greenland. Today Iceland and Greenland are two big countries. Vikings were the first European group to get to North America. Vikings also thought people to be brave and to fight for what we want. Vikings also left an impact in Medieval Times, the Vikings terrorized Europe for 100 years. Nobody knew when the Vikings were going to attack. The Europeans were terrorized hoping that the Vikings didn’t got there.

Conclusion I really enjoyed doing this project for several reasons. I learned from different cultures. I also learned how things were difficult in medieval times. The Vikings were a great group that caused a great impact on todays world and in Medieval times. I hoped you enjoyed my presentation and thank you for hearing.
