What AQA says: It was also evident that teachers are focusing well on comparison, with a substantial number of candidates achieving structured comments on similarities and differences (Band 4). It is one of the pleasures of marking poetry that unexpected and unusual interpretations are seen in responses: these will always gain credit if they can be justified by evidence in the poem and it is hoped that, during the course of study, students will be encouraged to find their own meanings.

The question last year was: Compare how poets use language to present feelings in The Manhunt and one other poem from Relationships. (36 marks)

Task One Fill out the table with all the similarities and differences that you can think about Think about the quality of your answer. Dont be lazy. Do you really think you will get even a C if you say that both are about love?

Paragraph Structure P – This is where you make a point about the relationship in one of the poems E1 – This is where you give evidence from the poem to back up your point A1 – This is where you analyse the evidence Cp – This is where you make a counter point by comparing this to another poem you have studied E2 – This is where you give evidence from that poem to back up your point A2 – This is where you analyse the evidence L- The final part of the paragraph is where you weigh up both points of view and discuss their similarities and differences.

Task Two Pick a poem and, using your notes, write a detailed paragraph plan for how to answer last years question. The plan should: 1. Say what you are going to put in the introduction & conclusion 2. Be at least 4 paragraphs long 3. Should include what quotes you are going to use
