Men Read: Lamentations 1:3 Judah has gone into captivity, Under affliction and hard servitude; She dwells among the nations, She finds no rest; All her persecutors overtake her in dire straits. 1:5 Her adversaries have become the master, Her enemies prosper. 1:5 Her children have gone into exile, captive before her foe 1:6 In weakness they have fled before the pursuer.

Av, either in reference to the divine Father (av) who comforts His people following the destruction, or to the Messiah who, Rabbinic tradition says, is to be born on the 9th of Av.
