CONFIDENTIAL1 Good Afternoon! Let's get started learning about COMPARING AND ORDERING DECIMALS Choose the letter of the point that corresponds to each decimal. A B C D Do you know these symbols? > and <

CONFIDENTIAL2 Let's review our last lesson We learned that we can write numbers in Standard Form ( ex. 45, ) and in Word Form (ex. Forty-five thousand, seven hundred eighty-nine and twelve hundredths) We learned that the location of a digit in a number identifies the Place Value of that digit. In other words, each digit in a number has a PLACE and a VALUE.

CONFIDENTIAL3 We learned that the decimal point separates the whole number from the decimal. We learned that the part of the number to the right of the decimal point is LESS THAN 1. Great! Let's move on to today's lesson

CONFIDENTIAL4 When we compare decimals, we line up the decimal points Starting with the tenths place and working from left to right, we find the first place that the digits differ.

CONFIDENTIAL In this case, they differ in the tenths place. So we compare the digits in the tenths place. Since 8 is greater than is greater than 36.4

CONFIDENTIAL6 We will use these symbols to compare > greater than < less than =equals Remember that the symbols > and < always point to the lesser number > 36.4

CONFIDENTIAL7 We can also plot these decimals on a number line We can see that 36.8 > 36.4

CONFIDENTIAL8 Now, let's compare 6.83 and 6.77 First, we line up the decimal points Starting with the tenths place and working from left to right, we find the first place that the digits differ.

CONFIDENTIAL Starting with the tenths place and working from left to right, we find the first place that the digits differ. Once again they differ in the tenths place. Since 8 > 7, then 6.83 > 6.77

CONFIDENTIAL10 Let's compare and What are my steps???? Answer

CONFIDENTIAL11 Let's compare and They differ in the hundredths place and since 9 > 6, then > 0.368

CONFIDENTIAL12 If the number of decimal places is not the same for the 2 numbers, we must add "place holding" zeros. For example, let's compare and 6.13 We need to add a 0 to so we can compare

CONFIDENTIAL Starting with the tenths place and working from left to right, the first place that the digits differ is the thousandths place. Since 4 > 0, then > 6.130

CONFIDENTIAL14 When we "ORDER" decimals, we write them in order from least to greatest or from greatest to least!

CONFIDENTIAL15 Let's order from least to greatest. First let's separate them based on the whole number (We know that 15 < 16.)

CONFIDENTIAL Then line up the decimals and add the place holding zeros Look at the tenths place. 5 < 9 so 15.5 < < Look at the hundredths place. 0 < 3 so 16.2 < 16.23

CONFIDENTIAL < < < Now our decimals are in order from least to greatest.

CONFIDENTIAL18 Let's practice! Use >, <, or = to compare each pair of decimals

CONFIDENTIAL19 Order these from least to greatest

CONFIDENTIAL20 Let's take a BREAK!

CONFIDENTIAL21 GAME puzzles/12-piece-jigsaw/ kite.html

CONFIDENTIAL22 1. Write 5 numbers that are between 0.6 and Order them from least to greatest.

CONFIDENTIAL23 2. Bob has more money than Sue. He has less money than Jill. Kelly has $.15 more money than Jack. How much does each person have? $2.20 $2.40 $2.32 $2.05 $2.02

CONFIDENTIAL24 Assessment: 1.) > means 2.) Name a number between 5.17 and ) Which number is larger? or ) In the decimal , which number is in the hundredths place? 5.) Which decimal is smaller? 0.03 or 0.3

CONFIDENTIAL25 6.) Order from least to greatest ) Plot and label the decimal )Write a decimal smaller than 0.06

CONFIDENTIAL26 You worked hard today! We learned that when we compare decimals, we line up the decimal points. Then starting with the tenths place and working from left to right, we find the first place that the digits differ. We will use these symbols to compare > greater than < less than =equals

CONFIDENTIAL27 We can also plot decimals on a number line. If the number of decimal places is not the same for the 2 numbers, we must add "place holding" zeros. CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT JOB!
