Converting Fractions to Decimals

In order to understand how to convert fractions to decimals, you must first know: 1)What a fraction is. 2)What a decimal is. Write down an example of a fraction, and of a decimal.

They should look something like this: Fraction: ¼ Decimal:.25

Today we are going to learn how to convert a fraction to a decimal using a calculator.

The simplest method is to use a calculator. To do this, just divide the top of the fraction by the bottom, and read off the answer. Example: What is 5 / 8 as a decimal?... get your calculator and type in "5 ÷8 =“

The answer should be 0.625

It’s easy enough to divide two numbers in your calculator, but how do we read the number?

Review of Place Values in Decimal Numbers A decimal number includes a decimal point and digit(s) to the right of the decimal point. Saying a decimal number aloud is very similar to saying a whole number aloud. How would you say the number 1375.2316 aloud? Once again, you need to know the place values of the digits.

The place values of decimal numbers are related to the place values of whole numbers. The whole number part (the part to the left of the decimal point)has the same place values as before. What we’re interested in now are the place values of the decimal part.

1 3 7 5. 2 3 1 6 no th side th side Note how the place value names start from the decimal point. Going to the left is ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. as before. Going to the right is tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths, etc.

The pattern going to the right or the left from the decimal point is the same – but there are two big differences: ·The place values to the right of the decimal point all end in “th.” ·There is no such thing as “oneths.”

Place Value Chart

Draw this into your books:

The answer for the example question was 0.625 How would you say this number?

Now that you remember place value, let’s work on converting fractions into decimals. Remember, to do this, just divide the top of the fraction by the bottom, and read off the answer.

Your turn! a) 1/2 b) 2/3 c) 5/7 d) 9/10 e) 8/9 f) 4/5 g) 5/7

How Did You Go? a) 1/2 b) 1/5 c) 5/7 d) 9/10 e) 22/100 f) 4/5 g) 8/1000 =.5 =.2 =.04 =.9 =.22 =.8 =.008
