What do my students need for a successful future? What will my future be like?

EDUCATORS…

The future is our goal! Our Mission: Take education beyond the present and into and beyond the 21 st century.

Do you realize… our kindergartners will work until 2067?

The future is our goal! Even though we do not know the workforce demands of their future, we do know the static skills all productive citizens must be comprised of…

According to the Partnership for 21 st Century Skills, there are 6 major categories of skills for the 21 st century learner! 1. Information, Media-Literacy, and Communication Skills 2. Interpersonal, Collaborative, and Self-Directional Skills 3. Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills 4. Global Awareness 5. Civil Literacy 6. Economic, Business, and Entrepreneurial Skills

21st century skill integration is not implying we rewrite and revise our entire curriculum, but rather to simply tweak what we already do and include more of these skills in our lessons and assessments (Wheatly, et. al., 2010). We are going to look at 3 ways to integrate 21 st century skills. 1.Purposeful integration as part of content instruction 2.Through creativity 3.Project-based learning

Purposeful integration as part of content instruction The Partnership for 21st century skills, in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and other leading groups for language, arts, geography, social studies, English, and math, have created 21st century skills maps. Through creativity Many of the fastest growing jobs and emerging industries rely on workers creative capacity, a 21st Century Skill (Hernderson, 2008). More than capturing and displaying ideas Involves the ability to… 1.think unconventionally 2.question others critically and thoughtfully 3.imagine new scenarios

Project-Based Learning As students participate in project-based learning, they flourish under this child-driven, motivating approach to learning and gain valuable skills that will build a strong foundation for their future in our global economy (Bell, 2010). Integrates MANY 21 st Century Skills 1.self-directional 2.interpersonal, communication, and collaboration 3.critical thinking and problem solving

As stated by Steven Paine, West Virginia state superintendent, For a long time, there have been two worlds that we prepare our kids for…, One has been the world of academia, and the other, quite frankly, has been the real world. What I see in 21st century learning is a blending of the two (Khadroo and Clabaugh, 2009).
