The gold search box in the center of the webpage is what you will use to research all of our databases and our online library catalog.

Notice the 4 tabs across the top of the search box. The “Find Articles” tab mainly searches in the EBSCOHost databases for magazine, journal, and newspaper articles, but also pulls up some e-book, book, and video results. This is the set default search. The “Find Books” tab searches the library’s physical holdings, and is the search you would use to find a book on the shelf in the library. The “Find Ebooks” tab searches the EBSCOHost e-book collection that our library subscribes to. The “Find More” tab has links to other databases and resources that our library subscribes to.

We are going to search for resources on Jack the Ripper, using the “Find Articles” tab. Notice that we could also limit our search to include only full-text articles and/or peer-reviewed journals (peer-reviewed journals are more scholarly) or we could limit our search to particular disciplines, such as Biography.

The first result is from a magazine, and the article can be viewed in either HTML or PDF format

If we click on HTML Full Text, this is how we see the article. If we wanted to print the article, we would click on the “Print” icon on the right side under “Tools.”

When we print the HTML full-text format, we can print the citation for the article in the format we need, such as MLA. We just use the pull-down menu as seen above and choose the format we need and click “Print.”

This is a print preview page. Notice that at the top, it shows how many pages will be printed, and under “Works Cited” is the MLA format of the citation for the article printed below.

This is the PDF Full Text format of the same article. If we wanted to get the citation for it, we would use the tools on the right. The 4 th icon down is the “cite” tool.

If we click on the “cite” icon the “Citation Format” box pops up, and then we can scroll to the format we need for our citation and copy and paste it into Word for printing.

To print the PDF format of an article, we will need to hover the mouse cursor over the bottom right corner of the article, and we will see the above box. The icon to the far right is “Print” and we will click on it to print the article.

If we go back to the result list for our search, and look at the second result, we can see that it is a book in the library’s physical collection. The box under “Retrieve Catalog Item” tells us that it is in the Circulating collection so that it can be checked out, it gives us the Call No. so that it can be located on the shelves, and it is not currently checked out so that we can look at it if we would like.

The third result is an e-book, and to view it, we would click on “eBook Full Text”

Using the links on the left side, we can view different chapters in the e-book, or we could scroll down to the index and search it, if we are looking for something in particular. If we found something of interest in the index, we can use the box at the bottom of the page to type the page number in and click “Go”

If we wanted to print this page, we would use the tools on the right side. The “Print” icon is the 4 th icon down.

When we click on the “Print” icon, we can choose to print the current page, or several pages, or the section we are viewing, then we click on “Print PDF.”

If order to cite an e-book, we will use the tools on the right again, and choose the 7 th icon. The “Citation Format page pops up and we scroll down to the citation format we will need.

If you go back to the Result List page, on the left side are “limiters.” We can use these limiters to limit the publication years that show up in our results, or limit the source types that show up in our results. We can also use a limiter named “Select Database” (and click on “Show More”) to choose which database we specifically want to search in. This feature is useful to ADN students that limit their searches to just the CINAHL database.

The other databases that the library has access to are listed under the “Find More” tab on the library’s homepage. Databases like CQ Researcher, Issues & Controversies, Opposing Viewpoints, and SIRS Researcher are good for researching current events and social issues. We are going to look at Opposing Viewpoints.

We can click on the “Browse Issues” link at the top to see a list of all the issues in the database or we can limit the list of issues by category and see the newest or most recently updated. We can also search for information using the search box on the top right.

This is an example of an article on Opposing Viewpoints. We would use the “Tools” on the top right to print, download,save, or the article, and there is a “Citation Tools” link you can use for getting the citation format you need, but there is also a “source citation” in MLA format at the bottom of the webpage.

This “source citation” can be copied and pasted into Word, as well.
