We hope this will give you a feeling for how to navigate the research process in general, and specifically here at NNMC. I am Dr Jeff Lenert, the head of Clinical Investigations here at NNMC and we want you to be able to put some faces with the names of people here who can help you generate and complete your research projects. Thanks for your interest and thanks for coming. I hope it is worthwhile. Toward that end the content of the course was developed in response to surveys undertaken over the past year asking what people with an interest in research wanted to learn more about. We can further tailor and improve the content if you would please give feedback on the course directly as well as by filling out your evaluation forms. Research Course

Step 1: Obtaining a DKO/AKO account AKO/DKO platform for research purposes What is AKO? Army Knowledge Online (AKO) is the world's largest and secure electronic platform. AKO is currently serving over 2.26 million users. What is DKO? Defense Knowledge Online (DKO) is an information sharing network required by the Department of Defense to support secure access to information (portal). DKO is using AKO as a platform. 2011 Research Course

MANY Benefits of DKO 1. Universal Email in the .mil environment. 2. Virtual workspace (telework) any time especially in times of national disaster (Sept 11, Pandemic, etc) or exercises (example: DCO) 3. Virus and Spam scanning for over 3 Billion messages per year. 4. Next steps: 4-5 The entire research writing process can be divided into easily manageable and clear steps: STEP 4: Develop a Research Question Select a topic Discuss Research Ideas Find Sources to support your ideas STEP 5: Submit your proposal via Proposal Approval Funding (if needed) Research Course

Step 4: Develop Research Question Good research question: could the "FINER" criteria be applied to it? F- Feasible.  Is the question answerable?  Do you have access to all the materials you will need to do the study?  Do you have access to enough subjects?  Will you have enough time and money?  Do you have the expertise to do this study or can you collaborate with someone who does? I- Interesting.  The question has to be interesting to the investigator, but should also be interesting to others. N- Novel.  Has this study been done before?  Does it add to the current body of medical knowledge? E- Ethical.  Risk/benefit ratio? Can the study be done with a minimal risk?  Will an IRB approve the study? R- Relevant.  Will it further medical science?  Will the results change clinical practice, health policy or point towards further avenues of research? If your question fails on any one of these 5 criteria, it is probably not worth putting much effort into. 2011 Research Preparation Course
