A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings By Gabriel Garcia Marquez We will talk about… Magic Realism & Imagery Author Author’s country of origin Religion and Mythology

Magic Realism Elements of fantasy, dreams, fairy tales, folklore, or mythology. Earthly, realistic settings. Laws of nature suspended. Realism combined with fantasy / supernatural. Humorous and thought-provoking results.

Magic Realism Example #1 “He had to go very close to see that it was an old man, a very old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn't get up, impeded by his enormous wings.”

Magic Realism Example #2 “Against the judgment of the wise neighbor woman, for whom angels in those times were the fugitive survivors of a spiritual conspiracy, they did not have the heart to club him to death.”

Imagery Words or phrases that appeal to the senses. Most commonly appeals to sense of sight.

Imagery Example #1 “Sea and sky were a single ash-gray thing and the sands of the beach, which on March nights glimmered like powdered light, had become a stew of mud and rotten shellfish.”

Imagery Example #1 “Then he noticed that seen close up he was much too human: he had an unbearable smell of the outdoors, the back side of his wings was strewn with parasites and his main feathers had been mistreated by terrestrial winds, and nothing about him measured up to the proud dignity of angels.”

Your Turn! Find five examples of magic realism in the story. Find five examples of imagery in the story using at least three of the senses.

Gabriel José García Márquez The Author's Life

Growing Up… “I feel that all my writing has been about my experiences of the time I spent with my grandparents.” Raised by grandmother and grandfather in home believed to be haunted by several spirits!

Grandmother told him ghost stories and of superstitions and omens—”the wildest of stories with a completely normal tone of voice” that made the listener wonder if they really were true. Her stories had him afraid to leave his chair, half terrified of ghosts!

Grandfather, a town “war hero,” told him stories of battles and how there was no greater burden than to have killed a man —Gabriel was younger than eight when his grandparents told him these stories!

How did the author’s childhood influence the writing of “AVOMWEW”? Specifically, how did the grandmother influence him? Specifically, how did the grandfather influence him? + ? =
