By Eddie, Skyler, Marcus and George. Kagan Report On Bats By Eddie, Skyler, Marcus and George.

Stop right there! You think you can just waltz in, turn the page and learn EVERYTHING about bats?! Well NO WAY!!!!!

Hang on a second…. Way!! This is a PowerPoint. You think you can stop ME??!!

Alright, alright, you win.

What’s a bat? A bat (as we all probably know) is a flying mammal. But is it really a dangerous flying menace as many think it is? The answer is (as we all probably know AGAIN) no. In fact, it’s more mysterious than it is dangerous (which it isn’t)!

Eeeeeeeww- don’t you hate eating scorpions and frogs Eeeeeeeww- don’t you hate eating scorpions and frogs? Apparently, bats like it (even more eeeeww)! So don’t read the next slide (after the next one) if you just ate something like a bowl full of asparagus.

You’ve been warned.

A bat’s dinner OK, there are 3 types of bats-- micro bats, mega bats, and other random bats. Micro bats eat night bugs like mosquitoes, moths and others. Mega bats feast on ripe fruit in rainforests. Other bats (the yucky part) like to eat…. Frogs, fish, scorpions, and plant nectar!!!!!!! Another bat favourite is rats.

Hope you didn’t barf.

I told you not to barf!!!!

Bat facts Bats are nocturnal (sleep in the day and wake in the night) It’s dark at night, so it’s hard to see. To find their lunch, they make sounds that bounce off objects. If the sound it hits something, it will bounce back. The bat will hear the sound, and it will go in the direction that the sound came from. This is called echolocation. The Vampire bat is the most famous bat in the world. There’s something wrong with this…

Even more bat facts There are more than 1,000 species of bats There are 150 species of fruit bats There are only two types of bats in NZ Bats are the only mammals that can fly Bats have leather wings Bats might have evolved from the flying squirrel. Most bats have nose flaps to help with echolocation.

Home, sweet home! Bats can be found in many places of the world. They flutter their wings and fly around. They live in caves, tree and rock crevices, man-made bat boxes and sometimes in the attic! A bat box 

“ooohh, look! It’s a cute little pup.” You wouldn’t want to say that to a bat baby. Although a bat babies are called pups, they look more ugly than cute. So I hope you don’t go “Eeeeewww!!”.

Here it comes…..

Bat pup  three week old bat  mature bat Life cycle of a bat Bat pup  three week old bat  mature bat

And then the mature bat makes bat pups and they turn into three week old bats and then– well, you get the idea. So that’s all for now. See you after the commercial break.

5 pretty good bat species (I don’t care if you like it or not, it was Eddie’s opinion.)

5 Vampire bat Vampire bats are found in Central and south America. Even though they are thought to be SUPER FREAKY, they actually don’t normally attack humans! Vampire bats suck blood. Their fangs also inject a numbing chemical so the victim does not feel the wound being cut open in it’s skin. (That pesky vampire bat!)

4 Flying fox The flying fox is a mega bat (see slide 8). Speaking of MEGA, it is the biggest bat in the world. It has a wingspan of 6 ft. That’s wider than some EAGLE wingspans!!!

3 Naked-backed bat These bats don’t have nose flaps (see slide 11) to use in echolocation (see slide 10). Instead, it purses it’s lips as if it were to blow a kiss, to form a disc shaped hole through which it calls. When the bat closes it’s wings to roost, it completely covers it’s back and appears to be naked.

2 Lesser horse shoe bat The echolocation used by these bats are billions BILLIONS BILLIONS BILLIONS better than most bat’s echolocation. Their calls are sent out pulses through their highly modified noses, which have a nose flap shaped like a horse shoe (which why these bats have horse shoe in their name). These bats are normally found in tropical Africa and Asia.

And now….

What you’ve all been waiting for…

NUMBER 1!!!!!! Tent-making bat In the day, this bat dozes in a shelter made by nibbling a large leaf so that it’s sides curl around it. This species of bat belongs to an American bat group called ‘leaf nosed bats’ due to their leaf-shaped nose flaps!

Funny photos “RAAAAH!!!” “AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!” “WEEEEEEEEEE!” This is my home!!!!! 

Bonus Fact The bat is really popular. People even made a super hero based on bats; batman. And that’s why this is here ------------------->
