Presentation transcript:

Elements originally were named by the scientist who discovered them People, places, object, mythological character, famous scientists Some are from the language of origin; Greek, Latin Today there are specific guidelines

Symbols are made of one or two letters H C Ne Mo Some are obvious Hydrogen – H Chlorine - Cl Some come from their language of origin Gold – Au Mercury - Hg

1 st letter is a UPPER case H C Ne Mo IF there is a 2 nd Letter, it is lower case Ne Mo Cl This is IMPORTANT to remember as we start combining elements Si = Silicon SI = Sulfur and Iodine

Lithium 6.00 mass

 Information: ◦ Element Name ◦ Symbol ◦ Atomic number = number of protons ◦ Atomic mass = protons + neutrons ◦ Electrons = protons ◦ State at room temp ◦ Metal, non-metal or metalloid
