Kinetic and Potential Energy There are two different states of energy. The two states are called kinetic energy and potential energy.

Kinetic Energy The energy of motion is called kinetic energy. Kinetikos means “motion.” An object in motion has the ability to do work because it has energy. K.E.= mass x velocity /2 A moving object has kinetic energy because it can do work as it moves.

Potential Energy Objects can do work because of their position or shape. Potential energy is energy of position. Remember, an object with potential energy is not moving or doing work. Potential energy that is dependent on height is called gravitational potential energy. (G.P.E. = Weight x Height)
