1 Topic: Kinetic and Potential Energy
PSSA: C /S8.C.3.1

2 Objective: TLW compare kinetic and potential energy.
TLW calculate kinetic and gravitational potential energy. TLW explain how kinetic and potential energy relate as mechanical energy.

3 MI #1: What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work.
Energy comes in many forms and is transferred when work is done.

4 MI #2: Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.
Kinetic energy depends on mass and speed.

5 MI #3: Calculating Kinetic Energy
KE = mv2/2 Note that velocity has a greater impact on overall kinetic energy than does the mass of the object.

6 MI #4: Potential Energy Potential energy is energy of shape or position. An object has potential energy when work is done on it. Gravitational potential energy is the energy of an object due to its height and weight.

7 MI #5: Calculating Gravitational Potential Energy
GPE = Weight x Height Because it is calculated as a force times a distance, GPE is expressed in joules.

8 MI #6: Mechanical Energy
Mechanical energy is the total energy of motion and position of an object. Mechanical energy takes into account both the kinetic and potential enegy of an object. ME = PE + KE

9 So What…? Real Life Application
Understanding kinetic and potential energy is important to understanding how objects gain energy and transfer it to other objects.
