6. There are two basic kinds of energy:
Kinetic Energy
Potential Energy

7. Kinetic Energy
Kinetic Energy- the Energy an object has due to its motion.
The word kinetic comes from the Greek word “Kinetos” which means “moving”.

8. Kinetic Energy
The kinetic energy of an object depends on both its mass and its velocity.
Kinetic Energy = ½ x Mass x Velocity2
Ex: Bowling ball and golf ball rolling down a bowling lane

9. Potential energy
Potential Energy is energy stored in an object due to its position or shape.
Two types of potential energy are gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy.

10. Gravitational potential energy
It relates to an object’s height and weight.
Equals the work done to lift it.
It is called GPE because gravity is pulling down on the object and the object is not moving.

11. Gravitational potential energy
Gravitational potential energy = Weight x height
(GPE = Weight x Height)

12. Elastic potential energy
Elastic potential energy is the potential energy stored in elastic materials as the result of their stretching or compressing.
The amount of elastic potential energy stored in such a device is related to the amount of stretch of the device - the more stretch, the more stored energy.
