What is Bullying??? “Bullying is the willful, conscious desire to hurt another and put him/her under stress …Anybody who wants to hurt somebody – and knows it – is then, by definition, a bully!!”

What is Bullying??? Bullying is also defined as intentional aggressive behavior that involves an imbalance of power or strength and is repeated over time.

Forms of Bullying Physical: punching, poking, pushing, tripping, “pantsing”, kicking, slapping, etc…

Forms of Bullying Emotional: teasing, spreading rumors or threats, name-calling, humiliating, intentionally keeping peers out of your “group”, manipulating others to keep a peer out of their “group”, etc…

Forms of Bullying Cyberbullying: malicious text/IM messaging, tricking students into revealing personal information and then sharing with others, sending inappropriate/unwanted pictures, and online threats via Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Email, etc.

Why Students Bully Students bully because they have low self-esteem. -MYTH- Most students bully because they believe they have the right to treat others badly, and somehow feel that they are better than their victims.

Why Students Bully Bullying is often about control, feelings of power, victimizing, and appearing “tough” or “cool”. Bullying is often done to earn the approval of peers.

Where can you break the cycle? A. Bully G. Defender- Dislikes the bullying and tries to help the victim B. Follower C. Supporter – Takes part in the bullying F. Passive Defender- dislikes the bullying but does not show open defense D. Passive Supporter- seems to like the bullying but does not take an active part E. Disengaged onlooker

How to Take Action! Immediately report any bullying to the closest adult on campus. Not reporting an incident is the same as supporting the person who is doing the bullying. 2. You would be keeping your friend out of trouble, but, more importantly, helping the person who is being teased or bullied.

who is being bullied-- privately: Support the person who is being bullied-- privately: If you could not get the person(s) to stop the bullying behavior, for whatever reason; go back to the person who was being bullied and support them privately. You could say “I am sorry for what my friend and the other kids said, and I will talk to them to see if I can get the bullying behavior to stop.”

Support the person who is being bullied—openly: I only recommend this strategy to kids who feel confident and have a certain amount of respect among their peers.

Do not feed into the bully behavior Don’t laugh at their jokes if they are humiliating someone, and do not promote or gather around a fight. As bystanders, it is your responsibility to de-escalate the situation, not feed fuel to an already hot fire.

Consequences The following information is provided in support of everyone doing the right thing. It is further provided to leave no doubt of what will happen should any Lincoln student decide to Bully or Harass another person on this campus. Delivery of this message is meant to inform our Lion students as to the environment we wish to create on the Lincoln campus.

Consequences Bullying falls within Clovis Unified School District’s expellable offenses. Specifically: “Any student who commits one of the offenses listed above shall be immediately suspended by the principal and recommended for expulsion from the Clovis Unified School District. All acts of physical violence, possession or use of weapons, or Education Code, Penal Code or Health and Safety Code or other violations will be recorded for each student on their Mandatory Interim Record including information on suspensions and expulsions.” In short…Students who bully, under its definition, will be suspended for (5) days and referred for expulsion.

Consequences Penal code 518 Extortion: Bullying/Harassment can lead to arrest. Following are penal codes that Officer Vang can cite. Penal code 518 Extortion: “Obtaining property from another Person by consent due to threat, fear, expose, or disgrace.”

Consequences Penal Code 422 Threats to Commit Crimes: Bullying/Harassment can lead to arrest. Following are penal codes that Officer Vang can cite. Penal Code 422 Threats to Commit Crimes: Verbal threats to do bodily harm can be made the following ways: “I am going to kill you,” “You’re dead,” “My buddy will get you,” “Watch your back.”

Consequences Penal code 242 Battery: Bullying/Harassment can lead to arrest. Following are penal codes that Officer Vang can cite. Penal code 242 Battery: “Unlawful force upon the person of another.” Examples are as follows: Pulling backpack, pulling hair, spitting, putting in a head lock Throwing objects at a person Striking, pinching, kicking, pushing, etc.

Summary Bullying/Harassment hurts others. Bullying/Harassment can lead to big trouble for the offender. Bullying/Harassment weakens us as a school and as a team.
