What do you ultimately want to accomplish? Clearly Define your Long Term Goal. Recognize your Starting Point. Long Term Goals

Talk with your coach about your training plan What detours and roadblocks are on your route (Vacations, Work…etc.)? Where are the Big Matches on the schedule? How Will You Get There?

Evaluate your progress by setting smaller goals along the way. Long Term Goals, alone, do not provide good feedback or specific directions. Short Term Goals

Help focus on the process of performance rather than the outcome. Positive Examples of Process Goals Training Goals Technique Goals Psychological Goals Nutritional Goals Lifestyle Goals Process Goals

Make sure your Performance Goals match up with what you are willing to do at practice. Attendance Intensity Focus Training Goals

Are there changes that need to be made in your technique (Process) to accomplish your Performance Goals? Technical Goals Utilize the resources available to you (Coaches/Teammates)

Be Mentally prepared for competition and practice. Use positive thoughts to motivate yourself. Psychological Goals Visualize yourself being successful before practice and competition

Do your nutritional habits improve your chances of achieving your Performance Goals? Nutritional Goals Access & Utilize good nutritional information ( Shippensberg Aquatic Club, 2009)

Do the choices you make away from volleyball help you achieve your Performance Goals? Are your Family and friends supportive of your Goals? Lifestyle Goals

Provides Direction and Motivation Where do you want to go? How to get there? Get you through the tough practices. Builds confidence and provides feedback Why Set Goals? ( Penn, J. 2009)
