The Colonization of Australia by the United Kingdom

What were the four reasons for the British to colonize Australia? British wanted to relieve overcrowding in Great Britain’s jails. British government recognized the importance of having its navy stationed in Australia in the southern hemisphere. The British viewed Australia as an economic base to expand trade. The British government did not want its rivals to start a colony on the Australian continent.

What were the reasons for the Scramble for Africa? Economic development – Europe needed new sources of raw materials Resources such as gold, diamonds, and oil. Politics – European nations showed national pride by competing for colonies in Africa.

Reasons for the Scramble Cont. European worldwide view – Europeans viewed themselves as the world’s most advanced civilization. Felt it was necessary to “civilize” people in the rest of the world.

The impact on Africa Questions: Explain how economics played a role in European colonies in the nineteenth century. Answer: Europe wanted more sources of raw materials needed for manufacturing.
