Target: How did the growth of cities affect life for Americans in the late 1800’s? What are the positives and negatives of living in a city like this? Bell Ringer

A. Urbanization- the movement of population from farms to cities- increased rapidly by the end of the 1800’s. B. A flood of immigrants and farmers moved to find a better life and jobs Go to slide 5 I. City Populations Grow

C. Many African Americans also moved from Southern farms to Northern cities.

A. Lived in buildings divided up into small apartments called tenements. 1. Many had no windows, heat, or indoor bathrooms. 10 people would share a room. II. City Life- The Poor

B. Diseases like typhoid, cholera, and tuberculosis (lung disease) killed thousands of people in tenements each year.
